As far as No. 1 seeds, the Selection Sunday projections from ESPN's Joe Lunardi to Fox Sports, will be checking out the Big East Championship.
Could West Virginia get a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament? That might be on the line Saturday night at Madison Square Garden when the Mountaineers face Georgetown for the Big East Tournament championship – WVU is a 2-point favorite on Bodog's NCAA Basketball Odds
WVU (26-6, 13-18 ATS) has won five games in a row and entered this tourney as the No. 6 team in the polls. So with Syracuse's first-round loss, it's possible WVU could jump the Orange for a No. 1 seed out of the Big East with a win tonight. At worst, WVU has stamped itself as a No. 2 team in its bracket. Included in that five-game winning streak for the Mountaineers is an 81-68 home win over Georgetown on March 1. But you almost have to throw that one out because Hoyas leading scorer Austin Freeman missed the game with an illness (later learned to be diabetes). That game was never close, as WVU led by 27 at one point in the second half. Star Da'Sean Butler led the way with 22 points, and he has been one of the stars of this tournament as WVU has two games by a total of five points with both coming down to a shot at the buzzer – one that Butler won.
Georgetown (23-9, 16-12 ATS) entered this tournament looking a bit lost, having lost four of six. But the Hoyas have been fairly dominant in beating South Florida, Syracuse — after getting swept by the Orange in the regular season — and Marquette. GU will be playing its fourth game in four days, so that might catch up to it (it's the third in three days for WVU). Hoyas center Greg Monroe has stepped his game of up late with three straight double-doubles, including 23 points and 11 rebounds the blowout of Marquette on Friday. He will need to dominate again tonight for GU to pull the minor upset.
This will be Georgetown's 13th Big East title game, and the Hoyas have won seven titles. WVU makes is in its second final and tries for its first championship. The Mountaineers are the first No. 2 seed to make the title game since 2000.
