Real Time Tournament Betting News and Notes For Thursday

Here is an updated look on some key news and notes for upcoming conference tournament games compiled by the staff of OffshoreInsiders.com

Thursday, March 8, 2007

TCU-BYU

The big dog Horned Frogs are in a defensive groove and could keep this game close.  Their last four opponents Air Force, Wyoming, San Diego State and New Mexico shot a combined 38 percent including just 27.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Arizona-Oregon

There are a lot of similarities in form and motivation.  Both have responded to slumps with three-game winning streaks to likely earn a birth in the Big Dance even if they lose. Totals players note the Oregon has turned it up defensively allowing just 64.3 points per game in their last three after allowing 76 points per game in the three games before that. Even head coach Ernie Kent said they are “playing at our peak right now”.

LSU-Tennessee

Sports online bettors who like riding streaks will want to look at Tennessee’s betting odds. They have won 7-of-8 SU after losing 6-of-8.  It’s no coincidence their return to form coincides with the return of the conference’s leading scorer Chris Lofton.  They went 1-3 with him out of the line-up.

North Carolina-Duke

Says Brian Gould of CasinoBettingNews.com, “When a big spread is involved early in a tournament, the first thing to look at is motivation.” One would think heavily favored Duke has something to prove as their seventh seed is the lowest they’ve had since 1995.

On the other hand, the Blue Devils will be without suspended center Gerald Henderson.  He is off his two best games of the year scoring 15 and a season high 16. r Duke has allowed a season high in points each of its last two games. However, for the year their defense allows just 60.7 points per game.

Maryland-Miami

Miami has only four conference wins, but perhaps their most impressive was at Miami 63-58 on Jan. 10.  They have since lost 11-of-13, but two losses were in overtime.

With revenge possibly a factor, Maryland is also on fire. They have won seven straight including versus Duke and UNC.

Utah-UNLV

The Rebels have an unfair advantage as hosts of the tournament. They are 16-1 SU at home this year and that includes 10 straight wins to the conference. However their closest call was double OT win to the Utes on Jan. 3.  The Utes should be playing with extra momentum as head coach Ray Giacoletti resigned under heavy pressure.

CBB

OREGON STATE +5 California

To say the least the two meetings have been very competitive. In the first game between the teams this season, on Jan. 18, Cal took advantage of the Beavers’ poor free throw shooting and won 77-74 in Corvallis. Then the Golden Bears survived a 13-point second-half comeback by Oregon State and won 84-80 in overtime in Berkeley on Feb. 17.
OSU is also rallying around embattled coach John Jay, so they will have some emotion. Cal has lost 10-of-12 to close the year.

This is a top dichotomous ATS and SU game.  We discount 98 percent of trends, but this has proven to be the exception to the rule. Explained in our articles around the Net, basically if a team has a great SU record but horrid ATS record or visa versa, you ride for that to continue as it is the sign of which teams are most under or overvalued.

Though OSU is 3-15 their last 18 SU, but covered 5-of-7.

Conference Tourney News and Notes For the Sports Bettor

Here are some sharp player news and notes from the staff of OffshoreInsiders.com

Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Providence-West Virginia

West Virginia is 4-1 SU on neutral courts. However two of the neutral court wins were in Charleston, West Virginia. Stevie Vincent of BetOnSports360.com reminds us, “One of the biggest blunders that square player makes is handicapping a neutral court as if it is a road game.” The square may overreact to West Virginia’s 2-6 road Big East mark.

St. John’s-Marquette

Although St. John’s will have the closest of any team to a home court advantage, they will enter this game without their leading scorer and rebounder Lamont Hamilton. He is a first-team all-Big East selection.

UAB-Marshall

It’s the seventh meeting in the last four years with UAB holding a 4-2 edge.  However the teams split this year and the six games were decided by a total of just 40 points.

Arizona State-Washington

Washington enters with great momentum having beaten USC and UCLA.  However the pressure is on as they likely will have to win four games in four days to make the NCAA Tournament. Seventeen of Washington’s 18 wins have come at home.  Their only win away from home though was to ASU 66-61. This game is at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Arizona State was competitive down the stretch losing by a combined 10 points to Washington State, Arizona and UCLA.

Oregon State-California

The Golden Bears won both meetings, but each went to the last shot of regulation, one going to overtime.

Richmond-Fordham

Richmond did not play a neutral game, but went 2-11 SU on the road.  Fordham enters on a four-game winning streak in which their offense got progressively better culminating in two games in which they shot 54.9 percent or better.

SMU-Southern Miss

Cy McCormick of MasterLockLine.com says the key to finding dark horses in March is betting on teams that lost a lot of close games during the regular season. SMU has six conference losses by five-points or less. The Mustangs are 2-0 on neutral sites beating Illinois State and McNeese State.

We will keep an eye on game day injury information.  SMU closed out the year without three key players who could be back: Bamba Fall, Derrick Roberts and Devon Pearson. Fall is their best defensive player.

St. Louis-Duquesne

After being buoyed by changing to an up-tempo attack, the Dukes have dropped their last seven. Duquesne did win the only meeting this year to go to 4-1 all-time in the series. Over/under bettors will look to see which team can set the pace.  Duquesne is an up-tempo team while the Bilikens play at a snail’s pace.

Michigan State-Northwestern

Points will be tough to come by as Michigan State led the conference is virtually every defensive category, only once in 31 games allowing more than 47 percent. Northwestern is fourth in points per game defense, but ninth in the more accurate field goal percentage defense. Six of MSU’s 10 losses were by seven or fewer points.

CBB

SANTA CLARA +3.5 Gonzaga

Battling to overcome the loss of suspended star Josh Heytvelt and now a bruised thigh suffered by standout guard Jeremy Pargo, the Zags get easily their toughest test against a very good Santa Clara team.  Without Heytvelt, the Zags are not as good as Clara. To the Bulldogs credit, they have been getting contributions from unlikely sources, but there is a point of diminishing return.

Santa Clara beat the Zags handily when the Bulldogs were without Heytvelt. This is a team that also lost guard Larry Gurganious and forward Theo Davis to injuries before the season even began. Now Pargo’s status is questionable after the all-conference guard suffered a thigh bruise in the game’s opening moments.

Pargo wound up playing a season-low 20 minutes while scoring six points. Gonzaga coach Mark Few expressed concern for his participation in the title game, noting such injuries often tighten up overnight.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC +7.5 Western Kentucky

The Hilltoppers were shown holes in their defense in mid-February when Sun Belt Conference newcomer Florida Atlantic came into E.A. Diddle Arena and dissected the WKU “D” for a 78-73 defeat.

Wesley Monroe is a dominant big man and WKU struggled greatly against such players this year.

MARYLAND -14 North Carolina State

Maryland is playing as well as any team in the nation over their last six. Wednesday’s 85-77 victory at No. 14 Duke assured Maryland of a winning conference record, an unprecedented charge from a slow start in ACC history.

“The past couple weeks, we’ve done an excellent job of preparing for games and not really worrying about two games ahead but worrying about the next game,” senior guard Mike Jones said after a 25-point outing. “In the past, we had guys who did that. This year, we’re mature and understand the situation of one-game-at-a-time and then you worry about the next game.”

“Maryland is playing lights-out basketball,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “They’re really good. They played as well against us [Wednesday] as anybody has played against us all year. I think they could go against anybody.”

3-1 THURS, 60-38 CBB WG, 14-7 NBA WG, 3 WISE GUY PLAYS TONIGHT

America’s Greatest has two college basketball and an NBA Wise Guy play among 10, yes 10 huge winners from Center of the Handicapping Universe GodsTips.com. One of the worst teams playing tonight is actually a good defensive team, on a great defensive roll and it getting points. Another team is without their key defender tonight, just when they need him most. We have a couple of sharp versus square games and another tournament game in which the lower seed is 80 percent SU all-time including five straight winners. CBB

NORTHERN IOWA +2 Bradley

The dogs are much better than their record shows.  A slump that they could not shake has them with a deceptive mark, but they finally snapped it just in time. Northern Iowa started out 15-4 — beating Iowa, No. 11 Southern Illinois and Missouri State along the way — before suffering a near total collapse. The Panthers dropped eight of their next nine and fell off the national radar.

Northern Iowa (18-12, 9-9) got back on track by beating Bradley on the road, and closed out the regular season with a 71-66 win over Illinois State.

A season-ending two-game winning streak did little to salvage the Panthers’ NCAA at-large hopes, but it did boost their confidence heading to St. Louis.

Going with a dog that is 1-4 their last five ATS playing on five or six days rest is 225-144.
