NBA Finals Betting – Matchups To Watch In Lakers-Celtics Clash

2010 World Cup betting will be decided on individual matchups as much as team matchups, and the same holds true in the NBA Finals, where the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers will meet for the 12th time.  The Lakers will be going for only their third win over the Celtics in the Finals, and they're going to have to get the better of these matchups when the series starts on Thursday in Tinseltown.

Ray Allen vs Kobe Bryant

These two have a rivalry that dates back to Allen's days with the former Seattle Supersonics, and it resumed in the 2008 Finals when Bryant averaged 25.7 points on 40.5% shooting, while Allen was much more efficient with 20.3 points on 50.7% from the field.  Bryant dropped 19 in his lone meeting against the Celtics, a 90-89 win in Boston, while Allen has averaged 15.5 points in two games against the Lakers.  Allen isn't known as a defensive stopper, but he finds an extra level of intensity when he faces Bryant.  If this were a 2010 World Cup contest, it would Brazil-Argentina: two technically-sound combatants that aren't big fans of one another.

Paul Pierce vs Ron Artest

Pierce averaged 21.8 points against the Lakers in 2008, but the Lakers didn't really have a defensive shutdown player as Bryant split time between Pierce and Allen.  While Artest isn't the defensive player that he once was, he can still make you work for every point you score, every single inch of real estate that you're looking for on the court, and he tries to get into your head. This probably won't bother Pierce much, and he has his own agenda in this series as he grew up in Inglewood as a Lakers fan. The odds that a technical foul will be called one of these two at some point in the series are very, very high.

Kevin Garnett vs Pau Gasol

The Celtics' return to being an NBA Finals betting option coincided with a healthy Garnett, who looked like his knee was 100% during the first two rounds of the playoffs, but he wasn't that sharp against Orlando.  That's a bad sign as Gasol has been having a brilliant postseason run, averaging 20.0 points on 56.5% shooting with 10.9 boards.  Garnett won't be asked to contribute much offensively, although he can as Gasol isn't the strongest defender on the team, but most of his efforts will be to keep the likes of Gasol and Lamar Odom from getting to the boards.  However, the Lakers need to get Gasol more touches as he had a high of just 13 shots in the 2008 Finals.  Remember, the Lakers had just picked up Gasol in February, and he's far more comfortable on the team, while Garnett was fully healthy.  The winner of this matchup will have a big say in his team's betting chances in this series.

Group A World Cup Predictions, Bet Lines

The biggest event in all of sports is just a few weeks away. Time to put our soccer betting caps on and start prepping for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. We'll start our group stage analysis with – you guessed it – Group A. Odds to win the group are listed in brackets beside each team.

France (EVEN)

The French are considered the class of this group but their sportsbook odds suggests bettors aren't totally confident in them. They barely qualified for the tournament, needing Thierry Henry's controversial handball goal against the Republic of Ireland to do it. Along with Henry, France has another great offensive talent in Frank Ribery, but this isn't as deep of a team as we've seen in recent World Cups.

Mexico (+350)

Mexico has to soldier on without its all-time scoring leader, Jared Borgetti, but it still has a solid, consistent team with good athletes like Giovani Dos Santos, Carlos Vela and Andres Guardado leading the way. Mexico's ceiling isn't too high but its floor isn't too low, either.

Uruguay (+400)

Many betting advice experts – myself included – like Uruguay's chances in Group A. Unlike, say, North Korea in the Group of Death, Uruguay arguably doesn't have a superpower to contend with now that France has slipped. Its midfield leaves a bit to be desired but Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez are solid offensive players. Diego Godin is a strong presence on defense, too.

South Africa (+600)

Every host nation in World Cup history has survived the group stage, and South Africa will have wild crowd support, but the betting consensus is that there's a first time for everything. South Africa may well be the first host to flop in the group stage as it simply doesn't have the same caliber of talent as its peers in Group A, save for Steven PIenaar.

Free pickFrance and Uruguay. France's handful of elite players should step up and Uruguay should outgun Mexico with its strikers. This should be one of the closer groups overall, however. France is no lock.

World Cup Betting: Group B Odds, Preview, Picks

As this sports betting blog breaks down every different World Cup group, you'll notice all different kinds – deep ones, lopsided ones, and ones in the middle – like Group B. We don't really know what to expect from this group. Argentina has the clear edge, but it remains to be seen if its competition will make things difficult or not. Let's take a closer look.

Argentina (-250)

A somewhat weak showing in qualifying (fourth place) was concerning but the bottom line is that Argentina has what many people believe to be the best soccer player on Earth: Lionel Messi. In fact, coach Diego Maradona claims that Messi is better than he was; high praise indeed. With Juan Sebastian Veron also on board as a strong presence in the midfield, Argentina will more than likely be a force in the tournament. But Messi has to be at the top of his game and nothing less.

Nigeria (+450)

The Super Eagles appear to have the inside track to join Argentina as the Group B survivors. They have an outstanding keeper in Vincent Enyeama and some decent offensive weapons in Obafemi Martins and Chinedu Obasi. We have to give them the sportsbook edge over offensively challenged Greece and South Korea.

Greece (+750)

"Ho-hum" would be the word I'd use to describe the Greeks. Their defense is nice and they have an inspiring captain in Giorgos Karagounis but this is just their second World Cup berth. A trip to the round of 16 feels like a stretch.

South Korea (+1150)

The best betting advice about South Korea is to get their miracle 2002 run out of your mind. Sure, they beat Ivory Coast during qualifying and went undefeated, making them a decent sleeper in this group. But I just don't think they have the depth or talent to stand with Argentina or Nigeria.

Free pickArgentina and Nigeria. Messi should help Argentina run through this group and Nigeria has the second-best roster on paper by a fair margin.

Game 1 NBA Finals: Celtics vs. Lakers Odds Preview

The 2010 NBA Championship odds for Game 1 between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers are set.  Bet Guardian has the LA Lakers -5.5 with a total of 192.5 at SportsBook

Here is the official NBA handicappers preview. At first glance, the Lakers would seem to be the better offense. But first impressions are the tool of the square player, not the sharp.

"Pro bettors don't use the fantasy basketball stats that the novice fan salivates over," says Bill Gould of Lines-Maker.com.

Boston scores 98.8 points per game compared to 102.3 for the Lakers. Does this make LA the better offense? Not to the sports bettor. Boston shoots 47.9 percent against teams that normally allow just 45.8 percent.

"That +2.1 shooting percentage difference is immense," says Gould. Compare that to the Lake Show shooting 46.1 percent to defenses that permit that exact 46.1.

The raw numbers suggest Boston is better on defense allowing 94.8 points per game contrasted with the Lakers 97.7 points per game. However, the more foretelling stats used by professional gamblers suggest otherwise. The Lakers permit teams to hit 44.5 percent of their shots, which is holding foes to 2.1 percent below their normal average. Boston allows 44.9 to 46.1, just 1.2 percent.

Boston enters the finals 62-37 straight up and 45-5 against the spread. They've played their best on the road at 31-18 outright and 26-22 to the sportsbook numbers.

The Lakers are a stunning 42-7 straight up at home, yet 21-27 against the spread, Overall, they are 69-29 outright and 43-53 in the back pocket.

Spread betting trends (all records are against the spread): Boston is 6-0 in the NBA Championship series. They enter having covered 7-of-9 overall. However, the Cs are a horrid 1-10 to the Pacific Division and 5-15 to the Western Conference.

LA is 6-1 off a straight up win but 1-5 to the Eastern Conference. Despite their record to the division, Boston is still 9-2 in the head-to-head matchups.
