Georgia Tech vs. Iowa Orange Bowl Odds

If you're betting next week, think of the Orange Bowl as a poor man's Fiesta Bowl in that it features a powerhouse offense battling a stout defense. Whereas I think the defensive team, TCU, will prevail in the Fiesta, I like the high-octane offense of Georgia Tech over Iowa in the Orange.

2010 Orange Bowl

(10) Iowa vs (9) Georgia Tech

Tuesday, January 5, 8:00 p.m. ET

College football odds favorite: Georgia Tech -4

You have to love the triple-option offense. It puts points on the board and entertains the heck out of us. Georgia Tech works it better than any team and road it to the No. 2 rushing offense in the nation, averaging 307 yards per carry. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt ran for 991 yards and 18 touchdowns; change-of-pace back Anthony Allen ran for nine scores. The real horse is Jonathan Dwyer, a powerful runner who amassed 1,346 yards and 14 touchdowns. To top it off, the Yellow Jackets have big-play ability. They're not a big passing team but, when they do, they go big. Demaryius Thomas caught 46 balls for 1,100-plus yards, averaging a ridiculous 25.1 yards per catch.

Georgia Tech scores like crazy but sports betting sharps should know that it gets scored on plenty, too. The Jackets allowed 25 points per game and five yards per carry. I'm not convinced, however, that Iowa's offense can exploit the Jackets' weaknesses. The Hawkeyes aren't an elite running team and quarterback Ricky Stanzi doesn't always inspire confidence; he paired his 15 touchdown passes with 14 interceptions this season.

Even though Iowa's defense, featuring Pat Angerer and Adrian Clayborn, is the real deal, I don't think the Hawkeyes can get the job done in the Orange Bowl. For one, as good as their defense is, they haven't battled the triple option before. Secondly, Iowa may be rusty after not playing since November 21. Lastly, the game means more to Georgia Tech. Iowa's season is a mild disappointment since it started 9-0 whereas just getting to a BCS bowl game qualifies as a success for Georgia Tech. Go with the Jackets.

NFL Betting – Week 17 Picks

New York Giants @ Minnesota Vikings

Bookmaker Odds (Bookmaker Sportsbook Reviews): Vikings -9.5

The New York Giants have been one of the biggest disappointments down the stretch of the NFL season. It might not be long until the Minnesota Vikings are filed under that category as well.

The Giants started the season 5-0 but now find themselves at 8-7. They have won just three of their last 10 games and are coming off an embarrassing 41-9 home loss to the Carolina Panthers. It also happened to be the last home game for New York at Giants Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings have been making a mess of things lately themselves. They have lost three of their last four games and are showing some fractures in the team chemistry that appeared to be so strong just a month ago.

The Vikings last two losses have been particularly embarrassing with road losses in Carolina and Chicago.

The Vikings need to win this game, though, because their last two losses have opened the door for the Philadelphia Eagles or Dallas Cowboys to potentially steal the No. 2 seed. The Vikings have slid to No. 3 in the NFC and if the Eagles win their game or if the Cowboys win and the Vikings lose, the Vikings would no longer have home field advantage and a bye week.

This has been an unprecedented drop for the Vikings and they better hope the Eagles can lose or they'll be in a much tougher spot heading into the playoffs.

NFL Picks: Vikings -9.5

Philadelphia Eagles @ Dallas Cowboys

NFL Betting Lines: Cowboys -3

The Eagles have climbed all the way to the No. 2 seed in the NFC, which is a huge accomplishment for them considering they started the year 3-2 and had an embarrassing road loss in Oakland.

Since then, the Eagles are 8-2 and have been one of the most explosive teams in football. They'll be in tough on Sunday as the Eagles will be facing a Dallas Cowboys squad that wants revenge for a bad Week 17 loss in 2008.

The Cowboys have been hot of late too and they have the type of defense to slow the Eagles. Philadelphia is still very much a pass-oriented team without much balance on the ground. That will be their big downfall on Sunday as they give up their No. 2 seed and the NFC East to the Dallas Cowboys.

Sports Betting Systems Pick: Cowboys -3

Rush Limbaugh Possible Heart Attack Overshadows New Year's Eve Bowl Odds

In entertainment and political betting odds news, radio legend Rush Limbaugh is in serious condition in a Hawaii hospital after experiencing chest pains at the Kahala Hotel and Resort. Other entertainment news the Real World D.C. features a bisexual housemate.

Meanwhile, professional bettors are winning at a rate the Bildeburgers Group would be proud of. The BCS Bowls Vegas spreads are taking a lot of action already while the Michigan State vs. Texas Tech odds have not moved since the Mike Leach firing.

Courtesy of OddsShark.com:Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Oklahoma meets Stanford in the Sun Bowl, while the Rangers face the Hurricanes, and the Mavericks seek a win in Houston.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are five bowl games on the schedule for Thursday, with Houston vs. Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl, Navy vs. Missouri in the Texas Bowl, Minnesota vs. Iowa State in the Insight Bowl, Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, and Oklahoma vs. Stanford in the Sun Bowl. The Sooners (7-5 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) beat Oklahoma State 27-0 last time out, while the Cardinal (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) are coming off a 45-38 win over Notre Dame. Oklahoma is listed as a 10-point favorite for the bowl matchup, with the game's total set at 55.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has five games on tap for Thursday, with Chicago at
Detroit, Miami at San Antonio, Utah at Oklahoma City, Philadelphia at the Clippers, and Dallas at Houston. The Mavericks improved to 22-9 on the season (16-15 ATS) with a 104-96 win in Denver last time out on Sunday; Drew Gooden had 19 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Dallas in that contest. The Rockets won't have former All-Star Tracy McGrady in the lineup on Thursday, as he's left the team and is waiting for a trade. Houston won 116-108 in Dallas back on December 18.

On the college hardwood there's just one Top-10 team in action on Thursday, with No. 7 Duke playing host to Pennsylvania. However, the day's top matchup has No. 15 Ohio State at No. 23 Wisconsin. The Buckeyes (10-2 SU, 6-6 ATS) had no problem with Cleveland State last time out, rolling to a 72-59 victory behind 30 points from David Lighty. The Badgers (10-2 SU, 6-4 ATS) blasted Illinois-Chicago 79-43 last time out, as Jon Leuer tossed in a team-high 17 points.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up a busy slate of 11 games on New Year's Eve, with Montreal at Florida, the Islanders at Ottawa, Nashville at Columbus, Colorado at Detroit, San Jose at Phoenix, Vancouver at St. Louis, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Anaheim at Dallas, New Jersey at Chicago, Edmonton at Calgary, and the Rangers at Carolina. The Rangers won't have forward Vaclav Prospal in the lineup on Thursday; he'll be out for two to three weeks with a knee injury. The Hurricanes fell to 10-22-7 on the year with a 6-3 loss to the Capitals on Monday.

Free Pick: Iowa State vs. Minnesota Insight Bowl

Matt Rivers, one of the best sports handicappers in the world, says go with the under in Iowa State/Minnesota game. The total is 48 at BetUs Sportsbook.

I understand that the weather in
Tempe could be ripe for the offenses to move the ball a bit but there really aren't many playmakers to be able to move that ball. Neither the Cyclones nor the Golden Gophers enjoyed much success at all this season offensively but both teams do bring some game on defense.

The quarterbacks in Adam Weber and Austen Arnaud have had their share of struggles this season which could always mean turnovers and some points that way but you really can't bank on that and to ask each team to get around 24 points just seems like a lot.

Minnesota was shutout a few times this season and has scored a combined 16 points in their past two games. They have scored at times in games but now without Eric Decker and up against an Iowa State defense that has held some other teams I don't see much going on there.

Meanwhile the Gophers defense has shown themselves well at times also in allowing only 12 points at Iowa, 20 at Penn State and 13 against Air Force.

This game really does not have an upside of a 37-27 yet it could finish up 17-7 and I wouldn't be all that surprised. Therefore the value is on the under.

Free sports pick: Iowa State under

Mike Leach Fired

OffshoreInsiders.com has confirmed that Mike Leach was fired by Texas Tech, just in time to avoid a balloon bonus payment. There has been little effect so far on the college football odds as the Red Raiders remain -7.5 to Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl.

Bowl Betting -- Fiest Bowl Odds

If you say you're looking forward to betting on the BCS Championship game the most out of the five BCS bowls, you're lying. Deep down, you know the Fiesta Bowl is the game to watch. It pits the country's top offense against the country's top defense. It doesn't get much better than that. Didn't I mention that both teams are undefeated? Let's make a pick.

2010 Fiesta Bowl

(6) Boise State vs (3) TCU

Monday, January 4, 8:00 p.m. ET

College football odds favorite: TCU -7.5

The TCU Horned Frogs are the favorite in this matchup for good reasons. They didn't just stumble into the country's No. 1 defense; they earned it by overcoming some tough matchups throughout the season. Among their standouts are defensive end Jerry Hughes, who rushes the passer as well as anyone in the nation, and linebackers Tank Carder and Daryl Washington.

Because TCU's "D" is so outstanding, the offense only has to be adequate. Junior quarterback Andrew Dalton went above and beyond what was asked of him this season, throwing 22 touchdown passes versus five picks and earning MWC Player of the Year honors. He makes few mistakes and moves his feet well; he joined three other TCU teammates as a 500-yard rusher this season.

Offensively, there's no comparing TCU to Boise State, however. The Broncos are thrilling to watch, having scored 40 or more points in seven straight games. Kellen Moore had a video-game like 39-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio and three different Boise State players scored at least 14 times this season.

In the end, I make my sports betting pick based on who wants or needs the win more. Boise State's season is already a resounding success and it has more national title dreams ahead. This was supposed to be TCU's year, however. The Horned Frogs arguably earned the spot currently occupied by Texas in the national title game and they're angry about it. Their defense should arrive at the Fiesta Bowl fired up and their offense will do enough to give them a lead. Boise State will still put points on the board but a 40-spot is out of the question. I like TCU to cover in a major statement game.

Free pick: TCU -7.5

Bowl Games Vegas Odds Preview: Holiday Nebraska-Arizona

ESPN bowl game streaming video has Bowling Green vs. Idaho and Nebraska vs. Arizona. Super online casino Bodog previews the Holiday Bowl.

Led by stingy defenses, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Arizona Wildcats meet in San Diego’s Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30 in a matchup featuring teams that just missed out on playing in BCS bowls.

College football betting odds have Nebraska currently listed as a 1-point favorite.

The Huskers arrive in San Diego boasting one of the best defenses in the nation.

Nebraska is second in the Football Bowl Subdivision in points allowed at 11.2 per game and ninth in total defense, giving up an average of 284.5 yards. The Huskers held Texas to 202 total yards even though it had been averaging 451.6 yards and 43.0 points.

Like Nebraska, Arizona’s strong defensive play is a big reason for its success. The Wildcats are 21st in the FBS in total defense, and have yielded two touchdowns or fewer in four of their last five games.

The Cornhuskers are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games.

Wednesday Free Pick

Matt Rivers is red hot. He's the top ranked college football handicapper of all time. In addition to a tremendous premium card, he has a free pick Northwestern plus the points in collegiate basketball.

Almost across-the-board sportsbooks have Illinois laying seven.

Illinois at home is superior to Northwestern and I guess should prevail today but why not take a stab on the improving Wildcats who have broken into the top 25?

At 10-1 Bill Carmody's team is on complete fire in the early going and they have done this all without their main man in Kevin Coble. Michael Thompson and John Shurna have stepped up in a major way and this team right now is pretty legitimate. I'm not saying they will win here and improve to 11-1 legitimate but they could and getting blown out to a good, but far from great, Illinois team just should not happen either.

The 'Cats have won 9 in a row according to the college basketball match-ups and have beaten quality enough foes in Notre Dame, Stanford, Iowa State and NC State. Illinois may be better than most of those four but not by much as Bruce Weber's team showed in that poor loss at Georgia to a still bad Bulldogs squad as the 9 point chalk. In the last game they were fully outclassed by Missouri and don't exactly have much momentum coming into this thing.

The bottom line is that Illinois is laying too many points to a Northwestern team that is still underrated despite proving they are a ton better than in the past.

Don't be shocked to see a competitive game that comes down to the bitter end. Again Rivers says take Northwestern +7.

NCAA Football Betting – Sugar Bowl Pick

Our BCS bowl game prep continues and we move on to the Sugar Bowl today. Here's a bowl that breaks down differently than many people expected. Firstly, few football handicappers expected to see Florida anywhere but the BCS Championship game. But, after a loss to Alabama, here the Gators are. Also, most of us would've expected the Bearcats to be fired up for this matchup; instead, they may be mentally broken after their head coach walked out on them to join storied Notre Dame.

2010 Sugar Bowl

(4) Cincinnati vs (5) Florida

Friday, January 1, 8:30 p.m. ET

College football odds favorite: Florida -12.5

The Cincinnati Bearcats have been slighted in so many ways that you could fill a Letterman top-10 list with them. First, they don't get any national title-game love despite their unblemished record this season. Then came the big dagger, as head coach Brian Kelly bolted for the Fighting Irish. Lastly, these undefeated Bearcats are 12.5-point underdogs. Ouch.

Is there reason for sports betting sharps to believe Cincy can overcome all its obstacles? Maybe. With or without Kelly on the sidelines, these guys can score. The Bearcats were sixth in the country in total offense, passing and scoring this season. Quarterback Tony Pike battled a forearm injury but would've contended for the Heisman Trophy otherwise. He threw 26 touchdown passes versus six interceptions and averaged 260-plus passing yards per game. He also has an elite receiving target in Mardy Gilyard, who found pay dirt 11 times this year.

The problem for Cincinnati, however, is that it gives up points almost as often as it scores them. The Bearcats' weak run defense allowed 141 yards per game this season and let multiple teams top the 200-yard mark against them. Florida has one of the nation's best rushing offenses despite lacking an every-down back. Quarterback Tim Tebow alone could give Cincinnati major headaches with his feet.

This matchup ultimately comes down to motivation and Florida has it in spades. Tebow was visibly shaken after the Alabama loss and will make it his mission to end his college career on a high note. Also, with Urban Meyer announcing his leave of absence, the Gators will want to make Friday night special for him in case he decides to stay away from football after all. The Bearcats had the wind taken out of their sails after Kelly's departure and face a tough Gators defense. Expect both teams to put points on the board but go with Florida. The Gators will try hard to make a statement and should thus cover the big spread.

Free pick: Florida -12.5

Free Pick: UCLA-Temple Odds

Rivers says go with UCLA minus the number against Temple in the Eagle Bank Bowl. The latest college football betting line has the Uclans laying 4.5 with a total of 44.5 at BetUs Sportsbook.

Here is his analysis.

I can't make this a real pay type play because I truly just cannot trust this UCLA offense all the way across the country like this but in the end they should be too good for
Temple.

Rick Neuheisel's team certainly has the superior athletes when compared to Temple and the bigger boys on defense that can make plays but the Bruins offense is anemic to scoring at times and therefore I just cannot go gaga over them here at RFK Stadium thousands of miles away from Cali.

Al Golden has really done a phenomenal job as the Temple head coach and I'm sure in due time he will move up the chain and become the head man at a much bigger program as he tried to do with these Bruins before they hired Neuheisel a few seasons back. His Owls are far from the dreck they used to be and should come to play today as a bowl is a Super Bowl to these kids so the motivation is definitely there for them giving them a slight advantage in that regard.

Temple had that nine game winning streak snapped in that last loss to Ohio that kept them from a potential conference championship so these guys can play but are they ready to really get it on with a superior program like a UCLA? My answer is just no and that is the bottom line here.

The Bruins have four All-Americans including a great kicker in Kai Forbath who can bomb away from anywhere. Freshman quarterback Kevin Prince has shown his youth at times and he has also been hurt his fair share as well. After some time off I think the signal caller will be alright today and be able to lead his boys to about 24 boys which should be enough for the win and cover.

UCLA is battle tested after playing the likes of Stanford, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, Cal and others. They're used to a higher level of speed and athleticism than the Owls possess and will outclass Temple in the end.

Again, the free pick is UCLA at the sportsbooks.

As well, many of college hoops' top teams are in action on Tuesday, including Texas (vs. Gardner-Webb), Duke (vs. Long Beach State), West Virginia (vs. Marquette), Kentucky (vs. Hartford), Purdue (at Iowa), Syracuse (at Seton Hall), and Kansas (vs. Belmont). As well, a ranked matchup has Texas Tech (10-1 SU, 5-1 ATS) at New Mexico (12-1 SU, 9-3 ATS). The Red Raiders beat Stanford 100-87 last time out, while the Lobos are coming off a 75-66 loss to Oral Roberts.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has just six games on its Tuesday slate, with Columbus at the Islanders, Pittsburgh at Buffalo, Nashville at St. Louis, Vancouver at Phoenix, Minnesota at Anaheim, and Chicago at Dallas. The 26-9-3 Blackhawks won their third straight game last time out, getting past Nashville 5-4 on Sunday night on the strength of two Patrick Kane goals. The 16-11-11 Stars fell 4-1 in Colorado in their last game Saturday, with Steve Ott scoring the only Dallas goal in that loss.
