Belmont Stakes 2010 Morning Line: Ice Box Slight Favorite

While World Cup betting is reaching a fevered pitch, sports betting has commenced a big month with the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals and the Belmont Stakes imminent.

The 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes is also looming. Ice Box is a modest favorite over First Dude and Fly Down to capture the third leg of the Triple Crown.

Horse racing handicappers have several proposition bets.  The more traditional include which horse will finish last. The more exotic are aimed at the host New York sports fans such as parlays for those sports handicappers who believe the NY Jets or NY Giants will win the Super Bowl paired up Saturday's winner.

For example, wagering the Jets to win Super Bowl 45 and Ice Box to win the Belmont pays +4000.

Gamblers can even hedge their bets by wagering simply that their favorite horse will finish among the top three. "With no clear-cut favorite, chalk lovers may flock to this security blanket," predicts Brian Kayma of ScoresOddsPicks.com. Posted lines to simply win, place, or show:

FIFA World Cup 2010 Schedule: Group D Vegas Odds Preview

In the latest in a series, ScoresOddsPicks Shea Matthews previews the FIFA World Cup 2010.

Like Group G, Group D in the 2010 World Cup will be closely watched but also avoided by many betting sharps because it's such a close one to call. The Germans still lead the way but the playing field has been levelled a bit recently.

Germany (-125)

The Germans are a consistent force in the World Cup, as they always seem to save their best soccer for international play. It's thus no surprise to see them favored at every sportsbook to win Group D. That said, this German team won't have a walk. Losing captain Michael Ballack to injury is a huge blow – especially to Germany's overall championship chances. Still, this team has enough talent and balance left over to remain the class of Group D.

Serbia (+275)

Watch out. We already knew Serbia was a popular sleeper and very likely to challenge Ghana for the second berth into the round of 16. Now, with both Germany and Ghana battling major injuries, Serbia's odds have climbed significantly. In Nikola Zigic, Dejan Stankovic and Nemanja Vidic, Serbia has a dynamic core and should score plenty.

Ghana (+500)

A lot can change in one week. Ghana was expected by many bettors to become a Cinderella team in South Africa but my betting advice is to rethink Ghana's odds. First off, star midfielder Michael Essien won't be recovered sufficiently from his knee injury in time for the tournament. In addition to that blow, key scorer Kevin Prince-Boateng was the man who injured Germany's Michael Ballack on a questionable tackle. That means Germany is likely to give Ghana a spirited game instead of looking past them.

Australia (+900)

They're not as big of long shot as teams like New Zealand or Honduras but Australia's chances are considered limited in Group D. They play decent enough defense but I'm not sure they have the depth or offensive flair to penetrate the other tough defenses in this group.

Free pick: Germany and Serbia. The Germans still have enough depth to survive, Serbia is really on the rise and Ghana probably can't go very far without Essien. The greater question now: does Serbia have a shot to win this group altogether?

Free Pick: Boston Red Sox

Matt Rivers has a free pick for Thursday on the Red Sox at Fenway. They are laying -121 to Oakland according to Bodog

This price is a little too cheap for me. Brett Anderson was lights out at times last season and has All-Star potential but he just came back from injury and in this his second start I don't see him being up to full strength just yet. That doesn't mean that the southpaw won't be better than Tim Wakefield who is very feast or famine with that knuckleball but Terry Francona's club has picked it up beautifully of late and are far better than the average A's.

Oakland stormed out of the gates in fine form this season as I believe they were 9-4 but when all is said and done the Athletics are mediocre at the very very best. The offense is stagnant as usual of late and cannot come close to comparing with the surging Sox led by the reigning MVP in Dustin Pedroia along with Youkilis, Big Papi and others.

Wakefield was on a few starts ago in Philadelphia ann then struggled in that last outing. I can't say he will regain his great form today but the guy is as experienced and professional as they come and should be just fine against the punch and judy A's.

Anderson may go five or six strong, like last week, but I'm not sure he's ready to exceed that just yet and the visitors are in for a tough time here at a price that just seems like too little creating a value and a bargain for us. Anderson has yet to go past six innings this season and with the way the Sox have been improving I am all about the cheap home chalk.

The pick: Boston at BetUs

For more information: 16 of 24 winning days and a 13-5 run after the 300,000* Brewers turned the trick on Wednesday in another winning day. Once again did you like how I released this winner on Milwaukee when the game was basically a pick and then the world followed making them as high as a 130 chalk? That's not an accident at all. I don't like to toot my own horn but I am the best and the world knows it.

World Cup Group C Preview

Group C isn't considered to be the elite group among 2010 World Cup sports betting fans – but perhaps no group will get more attention in the Northern Hemisphere than this group. The reason: international media centers USA and England are both participants. Let's break down the group.

England (-275)

On paper – it's tough to argue against England, not just as Group C favorites but also as legit contenders to win the entire World Cup. Few teams can match England's combination of elite level talent and depth. Wayne Rooney leads the way up front and has extremely skilled players around him, including Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the middle. The biggest threat to the English is, as always, the mental block that accompanies the extreme pressure they feel from the homeland.

USA (+400)

This sports betting blog and many others will agree that this is America's most hyped men's soccer team yet. It's time to find out if all the extra developmental dollars are starting to pay off. With Landon Donovan on board and Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey also around to chip in, the U.S. might be the second best offensive team in this Group. But defense could be its undoing.

Slovenia (+1000)

Make no mistake; the Slovenians will push the Americans for the second berth into the knockout rounds. They outdueled Russia to get here and allowed just four goals in 10 qualifying games. Like USA, Slovenia has a flawed team, but it's at the other end of the offense/defense spectrum.

Algeria (+2500)

Back after 24 years away from the World Cup, Algeria is considered the outcast of this group and the BetUs odds reflect that status. There will be some stunning upsets in the tournament – there always are – but Algeria probably won't be the team to wear Cinderella's slipper. It scratched and clawed in the Africa Cup of Nations just to reach the World Cup, miraculously getting to South Africa despite scoring a single goal. I don't see Algeria scoring enough to be competitive.

Free pick: England and USA. For all the worry about England choking, the group stage is rarely the problem. It will answer its questions in the later rounds. Slovenia will make life tough for the U.S. but I think the Yankees will outclass them with their arguably superior talent.

Game Preview: Atlanta Braves @ Los Angeles Dodgers (June 3, 2010)

Betting on World Cup games is becoming an obsession with sports enthusiasts, and so is trying to figure out the Los Angeles Dodgers. After a horrible start to the 2010 season, the Dodgers are suddenly only one game out of first in the NL West chasing the equally as surprising San Diego Padres.

Even considering their improved performance over the past couple of weeks, the betting world has dropped the Dodgers from +1200 odds to win the World Series when the season started, to +2500 now. Why? Because the Dodgers are playing on borrowed time with a shaky bullpen and offense that still relies heavily on the unpredictable Manny Ramirez.

The Atlanta Braves have matured much faster than the MLB betting experts had expected, and they lead the heavily favored Philadelphia Phillies by one and half games in the NL East. But the Phillies still hold the cards in the NL, and the betting odds on the Braves to win the World Series dropped from +2000 when the season started to +3000. Maybe the experts feel that the Braves young pitching staff will start to crack as the season goes on. That is possible, but just like Stanley Cup betting, you never really know until they play the games.

Starting on the mound for the Braves in this game will be right-handed pitcher Kris Medlen. When potential ace Jair Jurrjens went down with an injury, Braves manager Bobby Cox pulled Medlen out of the bullpen to take Jurrjens' place in the starting rotation.Medlen does not have an overpowering fastball. He relies mostly on breaking balls and off-speed stuff. That could be the recipe for disaster for the Braves in this game. One thing the Dodgers can do is hit the baseball.

Hiroki Kuroda will take the mound for the Dodgers and he has had a rough time the last few games. In his last outing against the Colorado Rockies, Kuroda was yanked in the fourth inning after giving up five runs on 10 hits. His ERA sits at 3.55, but he does have a winning record at 5-3.

If the Dodgers win this game they will tie the idle Padres in wins with 31. The Braves can put a little more room between themselves and the idle Phillies with a win. This game has the potential to be a home run derby, and that is exactly the kind of game that Manny Ramirez likes.

Jason Heyward possesses the power for the Braves as he sits at 10 home runs on the season. Troy Glaus, as expected, is also high on the Braves power list with nine homers this season. But the Dodgers get power from players like Ramirez, Andre Ethierand Matt Kemp. Those three have combined for 26 home runs this season.

The Dodgers will try to get to Kuroda early and if the Dodger defense can hold up, and if Kris Medlen can keep the Braves in the park, then this has the potential to be a very one-sided win for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4

NHL Stanley Cup Finals Odds: Blackhawks vs Flyers

Courtesy of OddsShark.com:

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers will both be trying to pick up a win on Wednesday when they battle at Wachovia Center.
Oddsmakers currently have the Flyers listed as 130-moneyline favorites versus the Blackhawks, while the game's total is sitting at 5½.
Ben Eager's marker late in the second period stood up as the winner as the Blackhawks edged the Flyers 2-1 in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final on Monday night.
Chicago cashed as -190 home favorites, while the teams played UNDER the 6-goal total listed by sportsbooks.
Marian Hossa scored the other goal for the Blackhawks, who now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.
Simon Gagne lit the lamp for Philadelphia, which outshot Chicago 33-26 in the loss.

Wednesday MLB Odds Winning Pick

Matt Rivers has a free pick Wednesday on the Pirates. They are getting +125 at Bodog

Carlos Zambrano is making his first start since coming back from the bullpen and frankly who knows what the Big Z will do? There is a chance that Zambrano may be very good but I'm not sure if his arm is all that stretched back out and you know the righty will be very excited and that probably is not a good thing.

In order for Zambrano to be effective he needs that biting sinker. But I think the guy is going to feel too good and too strong here which is never very conducive for the sinker to be successful. Granted the Pirates are not the hardest hitting teams but McCutcheon, Jones, Doumit and the Bucos at home are not terrible. Pittsburgh seems to have had the Cubs number a lot of late and Zach Duke is not a bad hurler.

The Pirate lefthander has never come close to repeating the greatness of his rookie season but Duke is a professional hurler who will pretty much always hold his own. The Southpaw should be just fine today against Lou's underachieving Cubs and at home to get a number like this back from sketchy Zambrno and the Sketchy Cubs as a whole is worth a small play for sure.

The picks: Pittsburgh at BetUs

For more information: 2-1 on Tuesday but unfortunately lost the lead fairly late on the Cardinals to spoil what could have been another 3-0 sweep of the board. The numbers speak for themselves as the run is still as golden as golden could ever be. I've won 15 of the last 23 days pocketing well over 4 million* of profit in less than the last a month. Nobody on this planet can match me right now, nobody!

MLB Pick

Matt Rivers has a free betting pick for Tuesday on the Twins. They are laying -102 at Seattle according to SportsBook

Nick Blackburn may not be great but the Minnesota right-hander can be very good and to get Mauer and Morneau here against the inferior punch and judy Mariners at this price is aok with me.

The M's have been a little better with the sticks of late but this team is still not a heavy hitting squad at all as they are Ichiro and not much else. I guess Milton Bradley can be good but he is still not that much better than an average ballplayer and it's not exactly like the M's have a stud on the hill as Jason Vargas is serviceable at best.

The Seattle southpaw has had some quality outings this season, I'm not saying anything bad about him but he strikes absolutely no fear in me and there's a reason why he is as well traveled as he is. The former Met and Marlin has now been on three teams in the last three years or so and despite having a stout ERA and being pretty good in the first few months of this season he is still "Jason Vargas".

Despite this year's numbers I prefer Blackburn on the bump today and clearly prefer Ron Gardenhire's club overall, with a couple of superstars, when compared to the well under .500 Mariners who are flat out bad without either of their two stud hurlers in Hernandez or Lee pitching.

For more information: It's now 15 of 22 winning days after the 300,000* on the Nationals plus about 175 won by 10 runs and the monster 400,000* on the Twins completed yet another perfect day. Right around another million* of profit on Monday alone. It's becoming a broken record but when you are hot and the best in your field this is the result.

Three more winners today including another huge 400,000* on Cincinnati and St. Louis. Bonus winners as well, a 200,000* New York-San Diego and 100,000* Cleveland-Detroit. Click now to purchase Matt Rivers picks
