MISSISSIPPI STATE -23 Mississippi Valley State

Miss Valley really does not deserve to be here, but the new NIT rules stipulate a regular season champ that does not make the Big Dance gets an NIT birth.  State is playing well. The Bulldogs seemed to be gathering steam toward an NCAA Tournament berth with a late-season charge that saw them win six of their last nine regular-season games and an overtime game against Kentucky Friday in the SEC Tournament in Atlanta.

The big chalks have reason why they are peaking now and motivation to do well. Three of the team’s five starters are underclassmen and the first players off the bench are freshmen.

Head coach Rich Stansbury said the NIT should help them get ready for more expected runs at postseason play in the coming years.

A bad rule created this mismatch.  We’ll take it to the bank.
