NFL

Panthers-Eagles

Associated Press

Jerome McDougle’s star-crossed career suffered another blow when the former first-round pick got hurt - again. The fifth-year defensive end injured his right triceps in the Philadelphia Eagles’ preseason opener and likely will miss the rest of the season. Running back Ryan Moats also could be done for the year with an ankle injury. Moats struggled to earn playing time last season and was inactive for eight games. He was competing for a job as the fourth or fifth back. While McDougle and Moats are probably headed for injured reserve, the status of All-Pro guard Shawn Andrews remains uncertain. Andrews has an injured right ankle, the same one he hurt in Week 1 of his rookie season in 2004. Andrews, who’s in a walking boot and rehabbing, made it seem as though the injury is far more serious than the team is letting on. The Eagles host Carolina on Friday night, and quarterback Donovan McNabb is expected to see his first action since tearing a knee ligament last November. Reid will announce how long McNabb and other starters will play on Thursday. “He’s had an awfully good camp, so I expect him to play well,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. Notes: FS Brian Dawkins (Achilles’ tendinitis) and CB Lito Sheppard (oblique) returned for portions of practice. TE L.J. Smith (groin) probably won’t play against the Panthers.

Cy McCormick, Professional Gambler MasterLockLine.com

Panther’s Jake Delhomme will play the first half at QB, followed by David Carr. Brett Basanez will come in for the fourth quarter.  Carolina in fact will play all starters most of the first half.

Atlanta-Buffalo

Cy McCormick, Professional Gambler MasterLockLine.com

Atlanta will play their starters into the second quarter.  Chris Redman has moved ahead of D.J. Shockley as the No. 2 QB. Warrick Dunn is out for Atlanta and Jerious Norwood is slowed with a stomach ailment, so Atlanta’s running game is thinned. Buffalo’s starting QB J.P. Losman will play a quarter or so.

Titans-Patriots

Cy McCormick, Professional Gambler MasterLockLine.com

Vince Young will start at QB for the Titans after missing the opener. Tennessee has several injuries on the DL.

Boston.com

For New England: no Laurence Maroney, no Randy Moss, probably no Ty Warren, and not much Tom Brady.

Vikings-Jets

Cy McCormick, Professional Gambler MasterLockLine.com

Minnesota will have each QB play one quarter: Tarvaris Jackson, Brooks Bollinger, Drew Henson and Tyler Thigpen. Jets will probably play starters into second quarter.

NY Daily News

After scoring 31 points in last week’s preseason opener, the Jets hope to continue their offensive growth tonight against the Vikings at the Meadowlands. The starters might even do something radical, like try a forward pass. “I don’t know,” Eric Mangini deadpanned. “I think it’s a possibility.” QB Chad Pennington was in for only two series (10 plays) last week, and he didn’t attempt a single pass, as the Jets focused on the Thomas Jones-led running game. Jones (strained calf) won’t play tonight, leaving Leon Washington as the only proven runner in an extremely thin backfield. CB/PR Justin Miller (hamstring), FB Stacy Tutt (foot), S Eric Smith (leg) and CB Drew Coleman (knee) are not expected to play. Mangini declined to reveal his quarterback rotation.

Journal News

The Jets’ first team essentially played the first quarter in this past Friday’s 31-16 win over the Falcons in the preseason opener. Atlanta was playing its first game under new coach Bobby Petrino, and the Jets did minimal scout-team work in preparation. This week has been different, with the Jets starting their on-field game preparation during Tuesday’s practice. “The first game, especially against a team with a new coach, you don’t know exactly what to do, so you don’t prepare as much,” tight end Chris Baker said. “The second and third game, you start to prepare more and really get into game mode. There’s more emphasis on offense and defense this week.”

MLB

ST. LOUIS (WAINWRIGHT +100) Milwaukee (Bush)

Adam Wainwright has pitched his best on the road this year. St. Louis is 8-3 in his road starts +5.9.  We know he pitches well under pressure as last year’s postseason leaves no doubt.  But as a starter?  Well as the Cards sneak back into the race, Wainwright’s ERA since the All-Star break is 3.07, compared to 4.66 before.  His strikeout/walk ratio since is 34-10 as opposed to 40-59 in the so-called first half.

Most importantly, the Cards have won four straight and 6-of-7. Milwaukee’s great start was in no small part to a disproportionate number of one-run wins. But with the pressure on, they’ve lost 7-of-10.   They are 9-17 their last 26.

The Cards have won five straight in the series.

Preseason Publications Help Isolate Over and Undervalued Teams

Joe Duffy (www.OffshoreInsiders.com)

Many a professional handicapper is publishing his preseason college football predictions. Unfortunately, these prognostications can have limited value to the pointspread bettor, even if the conjecture turns out to be spot on.

For example, all of the touts I’ve seen have forecasted USC to win the Pac-10 and Stanford to finish dead last.  It is quite conceivable for these prognostications to be flawless, yet the Cardinal could still finish with a better record against the spread than the Trojans.

We take conference foreboding an imperative step further. Borrowing the research done at Stassen.com, over the years we have compared and contrasted the consensus predictions of the respected preseason college football publications to the offshore odds.

While this has proven enormously valuable for placing futures bets, it is even more advantageous in compiling a “cheat sheet” of overvalued and undervalued teams entering the season.

First of all, let’s set the simple criterion. Stassen takes 12 preseason publications and uses a basic point system to compile a consensus.  If a periodical predicts a team to win their conference, they are assigned one point.  Two points are given for a second place prediction, three for third and so on.

Of course the consensus is formed by ranking teams by lowest point total to highest. Better yet, the specific point compilation helps us “rate” teams (see previous articles about the difference between rating and ranking). We compare the Stassen research to the odds to win a conference or division as posted by BetUs Sportsbook.

Major dichotomies are noted and teams are graded as overvalued, extremely overvalued, undervalued, extremely undervalued, or at value.

For example, the Miami Hurricanes are modest -115 favorites to win the ACC Coastal even though Virginia Tech at even money is the unanimous choice to win according to the preseason magazines. Yet, GA Tech is at +775 even though they are dead-even with Miami according to the 12 modules.  We flag Virginia Tech as “at value”, Miami as “overvalued” and GA Tech as “extremely undervalued”.

By no means do we gaze at just the top or for that matter the bottom of the standings for an edge.  For example Illinois is the second long shot in the Big 10 at +3500. However, they are a comfortable seventh (remember there are 11 teams in the Big 10) in the compilation.  We grade the Illini as “undervalued”.

Remember that the offshore odds take public perception into account.  No publication is perfect, but we have found the rated assemblage of the numerous sources to be more accurate in distinguishing the talent levels of the teams.

Even the most accurate conference predictions can be flawed to the gambler because betting odds are the great equalizer. Our system of contrasting the data with the betting odds gives sharp players the premier preseason sports betting cheat sheet.
