NFL

Panthers-Eagles

Associated Press

Jerome McDougle’s star-crossed career suffered another blow when the former first-round pick got hurt - again. The fifth-year defensive end injured his right triceps in the Philadelphia Eagles’ preseason opener and likely will miss the rest of the season. Running back Ryan Moats also could be done for the year with an ankle injury. Moats struggled to earn playing time last season and was inactive for eight games. He was competing for a job as the fourth or fifth back. While McDougle and Moats are probably headed for injured reserve, the status of All-Pro guard Shawn Andrews remains uncertain. Andrews has an injured right ankle, the same one he hurt in Week 1 of his rookie season in 2004. Andrews, who’s in a walking boot and rehabbing, made it seem as though the injury is far more serious than the team is letting on. The Eagles host Carolina on Friday night, and quarterback Donovan McNabb is expected to see his first action since tearing a knee ligament last November. Reid will announce how long McNabb and other starters will play on Thursday. “He’s had an awfully good camp, so I expect him to play well,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. Notes: FS Brian Dawkins (Achilles’ tendinitis) and CB Lito Sheppard (oblique) returned for portions of practice. TE L.J. Smith (groin) probably won’t play against the Panthers.

Panther’s Jake Delhomme will play the first half at QB, followed by David Carr. Brett Basanez will come in for the fourth quarter.  Carolina in fact will play all starters most of the first half.

Atlanta-Buffalo

Atlanta will play their starters into the second quarter.  Chris Redman has moved ahead of D.J. Shockley as the No. 2 QB. Warrick Dunn is out for Atlanta and Jerious Norwood is slowed with a stomach ailment, so Atlanta’s running game is thinned. Buffalo’s starting QB J.P. Losman will play a quarter or so.

Titans-Patriots

Vince Young will start at QB for the Titans after missing the opener. Tennessee has several injuries on the DL.

For New England: no Laurence Maroney, no Randy Moss, probably no Ty Warren, and not much Tom Brady.

Vikings-Jets

Minnesota will have each QB play one quarter: Tarvaris Jackson, Brooks Bollinger, Drew Henson and Tyler Thigpen. Jets will probably play starters into second quarter.

NY Daily News

After scoring 31 points in last week’s preseason opener, the Jets hope to continue their offensive growth tonight against the Vikings at the Meadowlands. The starters might even do something radical, like try a forward pass. “I don’t know,” Eric Mangini deadpanned. “I think it’s a possibility.” QB Chad Pennington was in for only two series (10 plays) last week, and he didn’t attempt a single pass, as the Jets focused on the Thomas Jones-led running game. Jones (strained calf) won’t play tonight, leaving Leon Washington as the only proven runner in an extremely thin backfield. CB/PR Justin Miller (hamstring), FB Stacy Tutt (foot), S Eric Smith (leg) and CB Drew Coleman (knee) are not expected to play. Mangini declined to reveal his quarterback rotation.

Journal News

The Jets’ first team essentially played the first quarter in this past Friday’s 31-16 win over the Falcons in the preseason opener. Atlanta was playing its first game under new coach Bobby Petrino, and the Jets did minimal scout-team work in preparation. This week has been different, with the Jets starting their on-field game preparation during Tuesday’s practice. “The first game, especially against a team with a new coach, you don’t know exactly what to do, so you don’t prepare as much,” tight end Chris Baker said. “The second and third game, you start to prepare more and really get into game mode. There’s more emphasis on offense and defense this week.”
