World Cup

Spain-Ukraine

United Press International

This year marks the 12th time Spain has sent a team to the World Cup tournament but the best finish the Spaniards managed was a fourth -- and that was in the 1950. Now, given an advantageous group, Spain looks to build momentum for elimination play. It may take a changing of the guard to change Spain's fortunes. The team has some talented younger players -- notably forward Fernando Torres -- ready to break through if given the chance.

Ukraine is a World Cup neophyte, qualifying for its first tournament, although in a more handy fashion than traditional entry Spain. Several of Ukraine's players, however, have World Cup experience from when the country was part of the Soviet Union. Under their own colors they've displayed a strong defense -- six shutouts by goalkeeper Aleksandr Shovkovski in qualifying -- and an offense that can put a game away.

Spain's last defeat came on 22 June 2004, when they were edged 1-0 by hosts Portugal at Euro 2004. Since then, Spain have enjoyed a 22-match unbeaten run. Ukraine have played five friendly matches in 2006 and kept five clean sheets.

Tunisia-Saudi Arabia

Both teams like to attack and with Tunisia's poor defence, the Saudi's may have a field day. With a strikeforce that has scored seventy-seven goals between them and a midfield that has netted fifty-seven times cumulatively, the Saudis certainly have goals in their side. Sami Al-Jabr, their top scorer has been persuaded to come out of his three-year long retirement by coach Gabriel Calderon as his wealth of experience, and of course his goals, will be vital. 158 caps and forty-five goals is an impressive tally for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers frontman. The Tunisians are also attack minded, perhaps too much so. Their defence is shaky although with Ajax's Hatem Trabelsi at the heart of it, there is every chance they can keep the Saudi's prolific strikers at bay.
