Sports Betting news and Notes For Games of Sept. 15

Joe Duffy, CEO of OffshoreInsiders.com takes a look at early week sports betting news and notes for this week's games.

Tennessee-Florida

Florida will be without their most experienced playmaker as senior receiver Andre Caldwell is out. Caldwell was a first-team preseason All-SEC selection. Sophomore Riley Cooper gets the start.

Duke-Northwestern

The betting line will be affected based on the injury updates on Northwestern star running back Tyrell Sutton. Sutton was icing his ankle after injuring it Saturday against Nevada.  He did return briefly after the injury, but then sat out the remainder of the game.

Pittsburgh-Michigan State

Pittsburgh lost starting defensive tackle Gus Mustakas to a torn ACL. He joins the following players lost since the beginning of training camp: All-Big East receiver Derek Kinder as well as tailback Kevin Collier, offensive lineman Chris Jacobson, and quarterback Bill Stull.

A great run stopper, Mustakas will be missed as MSU has 335 yards rushing to the Panthers last season. Two redshirt sophomores Tommie Duhart and Mick Williams will take his place.

Ohio-Virginia Tech

Not only did Tech look sluggish in a season opening win at home to East Carolina, but they were humiliated Saturday on national television losing to LSU 48-7.  Sources close to Mike Godsey, Senior Sports Handicapper of GodsTips, say that Hokies quarterback Sean Glennon is completely unnerved.  The starter from last year who led V Tech to 10 wins was pulled midway through the second quarter against LSU.

Head coach Frank Beamer has declined to name a quarterback starter for Saturday. Freshman blue chipper Tyrod Taylor started out slowly but played well against the vaunted Bayou Bengals defense.

Notre Dame-Michigan

For sports gamblers who handicap "bulletin board material", note that Michigan tailback Mike Hart guaranteed victory in this battle of 0-2 fallen giants.

Hart is playing through a thigh bruise and quarterback Chad Henne is doubtful. Michigan is 0-4 straight up since legendary coach Bo Schembechler died last November.

Miami Florida-Florida International

With such a huge pointspread, Cy McCormick of MasterLockLine.com  reminds us last year's infamous brawl may have Miami bending over backwards to not run up the score. UM coach Randy Shannon has not named a starter behind center as each part of their two-headed quarterback rotation of Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman is struggling.

Sports Radio and Sports Handicapping

We've said before that online sports radio stations can give good insight to the sports gambler.  Who are some of the best hosts and what are the top sports radio shows from a sports betting standpoint?

Norm Hitzges of the Ticket in Dallas is a true sports radio legend.  He's also unapologetic about his love for the pointspread angle. Switch stations afterwards as "Bad Radio" follows.  Not only does the show title fit, but it describes the rest of the broadcast day.

Philadelphia is the sports gambling capital of the world, especially when it comes to professional sports. The newer of the all-sports stations WPEN Sportsradio 950 has one of the premier true sports talk hosts in the land, Jody McDonald.  Like Hitzges, "Jody Mac" has no compunction about talking pointspread.

His show is opposite sports radio veteran Howard Eskin, a pioneer in newspaper sports handicapping as he was the original Vegas Vic in the Philadelphia Daily News. Eskin is heard on WIP radio.

Unfortunately, 610 WIP is a perfect illustration of the difference between true sports radio that the sports bettors prefer and "guy radio" which appeals to the great unwashed who fill out their Arbitron radio books.

On one hand, they have the stereotypical "you are an idiot, you are a moron" comic book character host Steve Martorano on five days a week, but hide one of their true sports experts, and admitted sports handicapping junkie Paul Jolvitz, AKA "Jolly" in the middle of weekend nights.

Unlike radio legend Pete Franklin, who mixed his shtick with substance, Martorano uses his grade-school name calling to waive the intellectual white flag. WIP also has sundry Brandon Lang infomercials further debasing the product.

Former Philadelphian and former XTRA Sports Radio personality Philly Billy Werndl moved to San Diego XX Sports Radio, but unfortunately cannot be heard on Real Audio any longer.

Though sources tell me he is an anti-gambling zealot, he is one of the top NFL experts. Mitch Levy hosts a show on KJR in Seattle.  We've gotten decent Pac-10 tidbits from his show that has benefited our sports handicapping.

WFAN radio in New York is the first of all all-sports radio stations and still the king.  While "Mike and the Mad Dog" combination of Mike Francesa and Chris Russo are their best known hosts in the post Don Imus era, it's Joe Benigno who has the best insight.

WEEI in Boston is solid too and it's all Patriots all the time on NFL Sundays and Mondays.

Rick Ballou, formally of Sporting News Radio, now at Jacksonville, Florida's 1010XL is one of the top college football experts in the land, especially with SEC and Florida based teams.

Ballou's former employer has opted to sell infomercial time to Mr. Duke Wins Larry Dukeheart and Jonathan Stone.

Do you want the spread and over/under winners for tonight's NFL and MLB? Everything you want is at OffshoreInsiders.com

NFL

Here are some computer betting trends for the Monday Night Football Games:

Ravens-Bengals

Baltimore is 5-2 according to the sportsbooks their last seven MNF. They have also covered 5-of-7 as an underdog. Baltimore is 10-4 versus the pointspread their last 14 overall as an underdog on the road of three or less.  However, overall they are only 3-7 as a betting puppy of three or less and they've failed 4-of-5 in opening week.

The Bengals are 6-0 against the spread in September and 4-1 their last five on grass. Cincinnati is 7-16 to the Vegas line as home favorites and 4-11 their last 15 home games to the NFL betting odds.  The home team is 11-5 in the series.

Baltimore has gone under 8-1 in opening week and under 9-of-11 as road underdogs of three or less.  Inside the AFC, they have gone under the sportsbooks total at a 16-6 rate.

Cincinnati has gone under the sports betting odds six of their last seven overall.

Cardinals-49ers

Arizona has covered their last four road games.  They are 5-0 to the NFC and 6-1 versus the sportsbooks their last seven overall. Gamblers fade Arizona if they see them in September as the Cards are 5-16 in said month.

The 49ers are 6-1 to the NFC West and a stunning 14-3 against the betting line on MNF.  However, those who bet on sports will want to also note that they are 3-7 as a favorite of three or less and 6-16 overall as a chalk according to the Vegas bookmakers.

Arizona has gone over 8-0 as road underdogs of three or less and six straight overall. They've gone over 28-9 overall on the road. San Francisco has gone over 7-0 as a favorite. The series has exceeded the betting total in 6-of-7.

COLTS, COWBOYS PRIME TIME SWEEP, BOTH MNF SIDES CLOSE OUT WINNING NFL WEEK & BEST BET IS IN MLB, AL GOM!

Colts, Packers, Texans, Chargers, Bears under, Cowboys cash in.  Now it's  the Arizona-San Francisco side and Ravens-Bengals side to finish off a winning week and a prime time sweep. No handicapper dominates any sport the way Joe Duffy's GodsTips does the NFL.

But an even bigger story is the AL Game of the Month goes tonight, a Wise Guy plus three MLB Majors. You get the all of today's Joe Duffy's GodsTips  $17 at OffshoreInsiders.com.

NFL

Arizona-San Francisco OVER 46

I will admit that I could not pull the trigger on a premium play simply because this is a battle of two up-and-coming offenses.  But neither offense is "there" yet and most importantly it falls into one of our sports betting golden rules.

Nothing affects defensive statistics than the ball control ability of the offense. Arizona's head coach Ken Whisenhunt and assistant head coach Russ Grimm both came from the Pittsburgh Steelers and the offensive side of the ball.

They are converting Arizona to the same ball control keep the defense off the field mentality. What this means is even if Arizona's offense is the most improved in the NFL, it could mean fewer points and yards.  The improvement will show up on the defensive statistics, because defenses always perform when they are off the field.

While both offenses will have their ups and downs due to youth, the spotlight of Monday Night Football and the fact it's early in the year, tells us that each offense will struggle tonight.

The 49ers are led by smash mouth running back Frank Gore, who eats up the clock.  So each offense could play very well, yet with such a high total, still go under.

WINNING PRESEASON, 1-0 REGULAR WITH COLTS, FIRST THREE NFL WISE GUY PLAYS AMONG 11 WINNERS

No handicapper dominates any sport the way Joe Duffy's GodsTips does the NFL. It's been a fine start to the NFL. Coming off a winning preseason, we start you out with the Colts.  Can we make it 12-0 to start the year?  We have our first three NFL Wise Guy plays of the regular season.

Wise Guy plays from Joe Duffy's GodsTips are widely accepted by high rollers, bookmakers, linesmakers, and fellow handicappers as the biggest play in the handicapping abyss. This is just fact.  You get the all of today's Joe Duffy's GodsTips  $17 at OffshoreInsiders.com.

NFL

HOUSTON -3 Kansas City

We told you this time last year that the Saints would be the surprise team of the league because they improved themselves at quarterback, running back and wide receiver.  Though Houston didn't improve themselves as much as the Saints did, few teams ever will, they are the league's most improved team.

Houston showed improvement last year winning 3-of-5 SU to end the season. KC lost quarterback Trent Green and revamped their offensive line. Houston is the better team and despite the home field advantage is just laying three.

It's certainly two teams headed in opposite directions.  The torch is passed today.

We are right at our lifetime mark with college football Wise Guy plays, 3-2 this year for 60 percent.  We have an incredible 14 winners Saturday.  This includes several television games LSU-VA Tech, Notre Dame-Penn State and several other national TV games. All professional handicappers are proud to show off the amount of research that goes into a pick.

If a handicapper gives you no rationale, rest assured you just paid for a coin flip.  Get accurate analysis for every pick at GodsTips.com. We have a huge mismatch in size at the line of scrimmage, speed mismatches, a few competition consensus plays and more as part of 14 college football winners.  Oh and some upsets. You get the all of today’s Joe Duffy’s GodsTips  $17 at OffshoreInsiders.com.

CFB

EAST CAROLINA -5 North Carolina

ECU outplayed Virginia Tech last week, so they are both confident and hungry following their near upset in allegedly the toughest stadium in college football, Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, VA.

Motivation? Well ECU is the ugly step sister to the ACC, so it’s a big statement game for them to make a stand in the Carolinas.

East Carolina’s rush defense held Virginia Tech and to 33 total yards on 31 carries on the ground in last weekend’s season opener, for a paltry 1.1 yards per rush average. VT’s All-ACC candidate Brandon Ore managed just 70 yards on 23 carries (3.0 ypr).

Head coach Skip Holtz used a variety of schemes to confuse the Hokies’ offensive line, as the Pirates notched six tackles for loss against the run. Linebackers Quentin Cotton and Pierre Bell led the back charge assisting the front four to clamp down on Ore and Co.

North Carolina faces a severe test against ECU, with three young running backs that combined for only 79 yards on 28 carries – a 2.8 yards per rush average.

UNC is a very young team and about 60,000 are expected for this game.  ECU is hungry and looking for blood against a vulnerable team.

Saturday Computer Trends

Here are some computer betting trends for college football pointspread investors for games of September 8, 2007.

Nebraska-Wake Forest

Nebraska is 50-22 to the college football odds after allowing less than 275 yards total in their previous game. On the other hand, they are 17-37 against the spread following a win of 20 or more points.

Wake Forest is 21-7 according to those who bet on sports after allowing less than 100 yards rushing last game. They are 8-2 following a contest in which they allowed more than 450 total yards.

Miami-Oklahoma

The Canes are 8-2 to the pointspread as a road underdog. But they are also 7-20 following a spread win including seven straight losses to the Vegas bookmakers off a win of 20 or more.

Oklahoma is a stunning 43-19 after allowing less than 100 yards rushing. A rare case of where the online sportsbooks have collected is when the Sooners score 40 or more points in their previous game.  Oklahoma is only 2-7 their last nine under such parameters. The Sooners are also 2-12 at home after gaining 6.75 or more yards per play.

Oregon-Michigan

In what is likely to get plenty of attention from football bettors, Oregon is a stunning 27-1 after getting more than 200 yards rushing in their last game.  Yet, they are 0-5 following a cover.

The Wolverines have failed in seven straight to the Pac-10.

South Carolina-Georgia

Georgia has gone under 24-3 following a win of 20 or more points. The Gamecocks are 7-0 their last seven road insofar as college football gambling databases are concerned. The Bulldogs have covered 9-of-11 as home favorites of 3.5-10. Check out the live college football odds for this and all other games.

Notre Dame-Penn State

The Fighting Irish are 8-20 after getting less than 100 yards rushing last game. The Nittany Lions are 31-8 after getting more than 200 yards rushing last game. However, they are also 2-11 after allowing 3.25 or less yards per play in their previous game.

San Diego State-Washington State

The Aztecs are 0-8 to the Pac-10.

Virginia Tech-LSU

The Hokies are 10-2 their last 12 road games and 49-16 after allowing less than 275 total yards last game. Tech is 49-18 following a non-conference contest. LSU is 36-15 their last 51 after allowing less than 275 total yards previous game.  LSU is 0-8 outside the conference last three years. This biggest story in this game is that the top sports service in the world, GodsTips has a Wise Guy play on this game. Wise Guy plays from Joe Duffy’s GodsTips are widely accepted by high rollers, bookmakers, linesmakers, and fellow handicappers as the biggest play in the handicapping abyss. This is just fact. ONLY NFL PLAY: COLTS LEADS TO ANOTHER WINNING DAY! NAVY V. RUTGERS WISE GUY, 3 MLB MAJORS + WISE GUY

We just added four baseball including a Wise Guy to our Navy-Rutgers Wise Guy play on the side. Off a profitable preseason, the regular season is off to a nice start with the Colts cashing in easily. No handicapper dominates any sport the way Joe Duffy’s GodsTips does the NFL. But don’t let that overshadow how darn good we are in college football.

We start out a humungous weekend with a Wise Guy play on Navy-Rutgers side.  Plus, we know we will have a minimum of three CFB Wise Guy plays Saturday, plus sundry Majors.  Get at least the four-day pass now. You get the all of today’s Joe Duffy’s GodsTips  $17 at OffshoreInsiders.com.

CFB

Navy-Rutgers OVER 48.5

Coaches always, always have a tendency to showcase Heisman candidates when given the chance. Rutgers gets a rare showcase tonight for running back Ray Rice and potential postseason award candidate quarterback Mike Teel.

While everyone associates a slow moving team with Navy, this is simply not true as shown by a pretty high scoring game (49 points) against another Big East team in the Meineke Bowl.

As sluggish as Navy was last week against Temple, they still rolled up 439 yards.  True Rutgers is a better team, but Navy is capable of playing better than they were against the Owls.  They have speedy Reggie Campbell to keep the defense honest and even their fullback Adam Ballard is known for the big play.

Also, Navy’s quarterback, and let’s see if I get his name right, Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada is their best passing quarterback since Roger Staubach. He will throw a lot more than he did against Temple because he will have to.

Rutgers good news on the injury front is on offense, wide receiver Tim Brown is expected to play. But middle linebacker Ryan D’Imperio out and starting defensive tackle Pete Tverdov is questionable to doubtful and has not been practicing.

Even Scarlet Knight’s head coach Greg Schiano admits they will have a tougher time defending the triple option.  They lost most of the linebacking corps from last year and lineman Ramel Meekins.

Expect plenty of points.

Thursday Sports Betting News and Notes

Thursday, September 06, 2007

Top sports service plays for tonight’s football are at MasterLockLine.com

Here are news and notes from OffshoreInsiders.com  private clipboard.  They are compiled from hometown newspapers and the team’s own press releases.

Colts-Saints

When these teams met last, Sept. 28, 2003, it was the highest scoring game in the Peyton Manning era. Manning threw for six touchdowns, despite not playing in the fourth quarter, in a 55-21 rout.

While the biggest question mark of the Indianapolis remains their porous defense, their high powered offense is not without concerns. At left tackle, Indy starts rookie Tony Ugoh.

Though elite sports handicappers warn against taking preseason results too seriously, many will note that the maligned Saints defense was ranked second in the exhibition session.

Indianapolis is very thin at running back with little proven talent behind Joseph Addai. However, they come out of preseason unscathed injury-wise with only reserve offensive tackle Charlie Johnson slowed by an injury.

Oregon State-Cincinnati

It looks like Oregon State will start sophomore Sean Canfield at quarterback. However, Lyle Moevao is going to play at some point, though unlike last week, no specific rotation is set.

Against Utah, Canfield was 8-for-19 for 87 yards, a touchdown and a pick. Moevao was 3-for-9 for 32 yards and an interception.

The bad news for the Beavers is that preseason All-American guard Jeremy Perry is out six weeks after suffering a lower leg injury to Utah. Junior Adam Speer makes only his second start in place of the All Pac-10 first team pick from last year.

Middle Tennessee State-Louisville

MTSU is off a lackluster 27-14 loss to Florida Atlantic. The Red Raiders are the only team in the country to play a pair of Top 10 teams in the first three weeks of the season. It gets no easier as their next contest is at LSU.

To make matters worse, the Cardinals had two extra days to prepare following a Thursday night tune-up in which they annihilated Murray State

The Top NFL Sports Service is Up With Tonight's Saints-Colts

2-1 YESTERDAY, NFL NOW UP

No handicapper dominates any sport the way Joe Duffy’s GodsTips does the NFL. This is just simple fact and has been the case since our scorephone Cadillac Club days. Utilizing modern technology more than any sports service ever, we’ve added more weapons to our handicapping arsenal in the off-season than we have since our incredible 1999 season. What a season we have in store! We start out with the Saints-Colts side.  We just added night and day baseball. You get the all of today’s Joe Duffy’s GodsTips  $17 at OffshoreInsiders.com.

CFB

CINCINNATI +4 Oregon State

As we reported in our free preview of this game, Oregon State will have their leading receiver Sammie Stroughter back for this game, but the odds have gone way too high as a result.

The weather will benefit the Bearcats greatly and Oregon State must play a rare game in searing heat. Temperatures are going to be on the mid-90s, something those Ducks don’t get much of.  Plus they are adjusting their body clocks to a new time zone.

The Bearcats have been practicing in this oppressive weather. They come in with high hopes, off a blowout win and with a new coaching staff.

Also the Beavers head to the road with big, big question marks at the quarterback position. Neither Sean Canfield nor Lyle Moevao has looked impressive either on the practice field or in their opening game to Utah.  The left side of their offensive line has a combined four starts.

This is a game if played later in the year, OSU would likely win by six or so, but it’s too early in the year for a team as raw as Oregon State to be heading to a new climate and time zone.

CALIFORNIA -6.5 Tennessee

Our sources in Berkeley are telling us this is the biggest game the Bears have ever hosted. They have the motivation after being annihilated last year by Tennessee to open the year. Sports betting experts love these “circled” games.

Last year, the Vols were bigger and stronger but they have just two starters back on the offensive line. Tennessee’s quarterback Erik Ainge will be playing with a broken pinkie. Cal is more talented, has home field and it will be tough for Tennessee to match the motivation.
