French Open Odds: Venus Williams, Roger Federer Lead Way

Men's and women's first round odds are posted for Roland Garros, so it's time for French Open tennis betting to begin. These odds are hotter than Venus Williams outfit.

In men's action on Monday, Roger Federer (-10000) opens against Peter Luczak (+1700) and will hope to defend his 2009 title. Andy Murray (-200) faces Richard Gasouet (+150) , while Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal, the four time-winner who has a clean bill of health, don't open their tournaments until Tuesday.

On the women's side, Caroline Wozniack is a -1200 favorite against Alla Kudryavtseva (+600) for Monday's action. Serena Williams (-3000) takes on Stefanie Vogele (+1000) and Jelena Jankovic is heavily favored (-2000) against Alicia Mollik. Venus Williams will play on Sunday; major tournament sleeper Justine Henin will play Tuesday.

Now Bodog takes a further look at Venus Williams. Venus falls fourth in 2010 French Open odds at 9 to 1, trailing Justin Henin, sister Serena, and Jelena Jankovic. She's ranked second in the world and has an impressive 26-4 record in 2010; in fact, Serena and Venus are ranked 1-2 worldwide for the first time since 2003.

But Venus struggles mightily at Roland Garros – worse than her sister does. She has seven majors but has never won the French Open and has survived past the third round there just once in her last five tries. In her 13 career French Open appearances Venus has reached the semifinals or better one time – when Serena beat her in the 2002 final.

For anyone who enjoys pitting the sisters against each other in prop bets, the French Open history suggests Serena has the edge once again.

We can't examine the 2010 French Open odds without reviewing Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer.

Naturally, Nadal is the favorite at 2 to 5. He's Mr. French Open, a force on the clay of Roland Garros who has four career titles there. Last year, his knee troubles ended his 31-match Roland Garros winning streak. But Nadal's uncle and coach, Toni, claims Nadal's knees are "perfect" this year. The sportsbook odds suggest that could be true.

Federer (4 to 1) enters the tournament as the world No. 1 and the defending French Open champion. Last year, he captured the elusive major to complete the career Grand Slam. However, you can bet the victory wasn't the same without Nadal challenging him. The Swiss Mister, who has more major titles than any other male tennis player ever, should get the matchup he craves this time around.
