Southern Miss-Tulsa
Press Register
Southern Miss completes its back-to-back Tuesday appearances on ESPN2 tonight when it plays at Tulsa, where the Golden Eagles hope to make an early statement in the Conference USA football race. Southern Miss (3-1, 1-0) knocked off last year’s East Division champ a week ago when it beat Central Florida 19-14 in Orlando and now USM gets a crack at the league’s defending champion. The Golden Hurricane (3-1, 0-0) won the West Division crown last season and then belted UCF to win the league title. Tulsa also handed Southern Miss its worst conference loss a year ago, smacking the Eagles 34-17 in Hattiesburg. Tulsa’s offense is producing big numbers again this season, averaging 30 points and 417 total yards. Tulsa is picking up 282 yards through the air. Wide receiver Idris Moss is averaging 22.7 yards per catch. Southern Miss has generated good numbers, too. The Eagles are fifth in the league in total offense (365 yards) and are averaging 27 points. USM is the top rushing team (182 yards) and true freshman running back Damion Fletcher is the league’s top runner with 122.8 yards a game. Junior quarterback Jeremy Young (46-of-84 for 600 yards) doesn’t have Smith’s gaudy stats, but he’s been efficient during USM’s three-game winning streak and hasn’t thrown an interception since the opening game against Florida. USM’s defense is playing much better than a year ago. The Eagles give up a league best 16.2 points and 302 total yards. Tulsa’s defense has been tough as well, yielding 20.5 points and only 274 total yards.
Sun Herald
The Golden Hurricane won the league title in its first year as a member and is scoring 33.4 points a game in coach Steve Kragthorpe’s tenure. The team improved to 3-1 with a 24-23 overtime victory against Navy. Tulsa’s only loss came at Brigham Young, where the Hurricane fell 49-24. And if the Golden Eagles need any more motivation to increase the intensity, there is the fact Tulsa beat Southern Miss 34-17 last year, a rare whipping in Hattiesburg. For Southern Miss, the game is critical during a difficult conference stretch of UCF, Tulsa and hot Houston in consecutive weeks.
