Boston College-Miami Florida

If Miami loses Thursday to the Eagles (9-2, 5-2), its season will end at 5-7, which would be UM’s worst record since going 3-8 in 1977. A win would put the Hurricanes at .500 for the year, and could help them earn a bid to the MPC Computers Bowl, which is played Dec. 31 in Boise, Idaho. Coker was noticeably troubled by his team’s lack of effort during Saturday’s 17-7 loss to Virginia. Quarterback Kirby Freeman said before Sunday’s practice Coker addressed his team and asked players who were too emotionally drained to compete for a win to sit out Thursday’s game. Freeman said players who were no longer fit to bring the focus and effort needed to earn the Hurricanes a bowl bid were asked to, “Be a man about it and step aside. ... physically remove yourself.”

Dolphins-Lions

Running back Kevin Jones was listed as questionable on the Detroit Lions’ injury list Tuesday, but sources say there’s no chance he’ll play Thursday against the Miami Dolphins.Jones sprained his ankle against the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday and won’t be recovered in time to play on Thanksgiving. The Lions got some good news, though, because the injury isn’t a high ankle sprain and Jones is expected to return to action in a week or two. The Lions will also be without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, who is coming off a four-game suspension for violating the league’s steroid abuse policy, but he isn’t sufficiently healed from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The Lions will probably also be without wide receivers Eddie Drummond (concussion) and Devale Ellis (shoulder), who were hurt against the Cardinals. That means the Lions will activate wide receiver Mike Williams, who hasn’t played in a game since early October.

Detroit News

Joey Harrington won’t try to fool himself into thinking that playing quarterback for the Dolphins on Thursday against the Lions is just another game. There are too many memories—some good, but more bad—from his four-year torture test with the Lions for Harrington not to have mixed emotions about his return to Ford Field. Harrington is returning on a high note. The Dolphins (4-6) have a three-game win streak and can improve their playoff chances with a victory over the Lions.

Buccaneers-Cowboys

Associated Press

The Bucs are two-thirds of the way through a demanding stretch that has them playing three times in eleven days, with two of the games on the road. After losing at Carolina last week, they rebounded yesterday to beat Washington 20-to-17. Heading into their annual Thanksgiving Day game, the Dallas Cowboys are in a crucial stretch of the season, now tied for first place in the NFC East with New York. The Cowboys have an opportunity to put together three straight wins for the first time this season. Tampa is tied with Tennessee for having played the toughest schedule in the league through 11 weeks, with their opponents totaling a .566 winning percentage. Thursday afternoon’s game may be a tougher test than some expect. The Bucs have won the last three against Dallas, and Gruden is 3-0 against the Cowboys.

Broncos-Chiefs

Sun Herald

There’s quite a bit on the line in Thursday night’s game between Denver and Kansas City, who trail San Diego in the AFC West, easily the NFL’s best division this season. Denver is favored on the road by one point despite blowing a 24-7 third-quarter lead at home Sunday night and losing to San Diego. That dropped the Broncos into second place, a game behind the Chargers, a game ahead of the Chiefs. The 35-27 final was not only a blow to the Broncos’ won-lost record, but a blow to the ego of a defense that considers itself the NFL’s best. Is it? In losses to San Diego and Indianapolis, both at home, it has allowed a total of 69 points.
