CBB

Butler-Tennessee

Press Notes

Tennessee improved to 4-0 on the season with a 99-65 victory over Coppin State Sunday in Knoxville. The Vols are averaging 86.8 points per game while forcing their opponents into committing 26.8 turnovers. Each of Tennessee’s opponents has turned the ball over at least 20 times, including 32 errors by UNC Wilmington. Entering the 2006-07 season, six of UT’s 11 scholarship players had never played in a Division I game before. UT is faced with replacing more than half of its scoring (54 percent), rebounds (51.8) and minutes played (51.3%) from the 2005-06 squad. Samford-Arizona

Press Notes

The Samford University basketball team will face off against its second nationally-ranked opponent of the 2006-07 campaign Wednesday as the Bulldogs meet the 15th-ranked Arizona Wildcats. Earlier this season, Samford (1-2) opened the year on the road against the top-ranked and defending national champion Florida Gators. The Bulldogs finished the matchup with three players scoring in double figures, but dropped a hard-fought 79-54 decision in front of a near sell-out crowd of over 11,000 fans at the O’Connell Center. Samford enters Wednesday’s contest looking to rebound from a tough 69-62 loss at Towson on Thursday. Despite only shooting 12.5 percent (3-of-24) from beyond the arc, the Bulldogs trimmed Towson’s lead to three points with just over a minute left. Arizona (2-1) heads into the game as the 15th-ranked team in the nation and has won two-straight games. The Wildcats dropped their season-opener at Virginia, 93-90, but have since posted lopsided home wins against Northern Arizona, 101-79, and New Mexico State, 102-87. Arizona is averaging 97.7 points per game and has five players averaging double figures in scoring. Charlotte-Syracuse

Post Standard

Charlotte 49ers were the ones who ruined the afterglow of the Orange’s 2003 NCAA Championship with a 96-92 victory in the Carrier Dome to open the 2003-04 season. Although the game will be the first meeting since the upset, it’s hardly a revenge opportunity for Syracuse. Only Matt Gorman remains from that national title team. Only Gorman, Terrence Roberts, Darryl Watkins and Demetris Nichols played in the two teams’ first matchup, and they played a total of 22 minutes and scored zero points. Charlotte has no holdovers from that team. Lutz has a team that will get stronger as the year goes on. With just two starters returning from an NIT team, the 49ers have already had their growing pains. After beating a very good Hofstra team in the season opener, they lost to North Texas a day later. The coach took some of the blame for having back-to-back games, but the real difference between the win and the loss was his team’s shooting. This Charlotte team, without an established post presence and a thin and inexperienced front line, will win and lose by the 3-pointer. UCLA-GA Tech

LA Times

When UCLA plays Georgia Tech on Wednesday in the finals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational, the Bruins will face a team younger and less experienced than itself for a change. The Yellow Jackets start three freshmen, including 6-foot-8, 215-pound Thaddeus Young, a forward from Memphis who is regarded as one of the best rookies in the country. Young had 11 points in 19th-ranked Georgia Tech’s 92-85 upset of 12th-ranked Memphis on Tuesday. The other freshman starters are 6-5 guard Javaris Crittenton and 6-8 forward Zach Peacock. Gonzaga-North Carolina

Charlotte Observer

When UCLA plays Georgia Tech on Wednesday in the finals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational, the Bruins will face a team younger and less experienced than itself for a change. Gonzaga has been remarkably successful against ACC teams, going 7-1 all-time. Hansbrough is off to a terrific start, averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. North Carolina sophomore Danny Green is expected to play despite sitting out against Gardner-Webb on Sunday because of a sprained ankle. Press Notes

Gonzaga University has had remarkable success against the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Bulldogs 7-1 all time against ACC competition, including seven straight winners. The Bulldogs are averaging 87.0 ppg through four games.

Princeton-Manhattan

Daily Princetonian

A week and a half ago, there was no time to rest for the men’s basketball team as it opened its season at the BCA Classic. After playing three games in three days, however, Princeton (2-1 overall) earned nine days in practice for tonight’s game. In the BCA Classic, the Orange and Black fell in their opener to Loyola-Chicago but then rebounded to defeat VMI and Alabama A&M. Princeton’s two non-conference victories equal the number of non-Ivy wins the Tigers amassed all of last season. Defensively, Princeton is only giving up 58.3 points per game, and is holding its opponents to 32 percent three-point shooting.
