SOUTH ILLINOIS -3 Drake

In the NFC playoffs, we will admit that the NY Giants were our Achilles heel. Then again, we nailed a Wise Guy on them on the Super Bowl culminating a fantastic football season. In college hoops, our historic season has had a notable bump: Drake.

But tonight the overachievers face one of the toughest home crowds in the land. The Salukis have posted a 59-1 home record against Missouri Valley Conference foes since the start of the 2001-02 season.

Drake has not won in
Carbondale since Feb. 17, 1996. What does Drake's head coach think? It's arguably one of the toughest places to play in the country," coach Keno Davis said.

The Bulldogs are 13-0 in the conference, including wins at second-place Illinois State (9-4) and third-place Creighton (8-5). No other venue in the Valley, however, rivals the atmosphere of Southern Illinois' 9,600-seat arena.

"If you go back to the Bible when Daniel went into the lions' den, I think that's a pretty good comparison," Missouri State coach Barry Hinson said. "(The fans) are smart, they do their homework and they know everything about you and everything about players on the visiting teams."

They are 88-5 straight up overall at SIU Arena.

Drake has dodged bullets. They struggled twice to lowly Evansville. In their 13 conference wins, it's been by an average of eight points, several within four points. They don't dodge the bullet tonight.
