Wildcats (2-1) rebounded from an embarrassing 34-17 loss to Division I-AA New Hampshire to beat Eastern Michigan 14-6 last week. Nevada (1-2) lost road games to Fresno State 28-19 and Arizona State 52-21 before winning last week’s home opener against Colorado State 28-10. The Wolf Pack played a Big Ten team once before, losing at Wisconsin in 1993, but the Wildcats will be the first from their conference to take the field at 29,993-seat Mackay Stadium in Nevada’s 110-year football history. Reno Mayor Bob Cashell called a news conference on the stadium turf earlier this week to ask local businesses to close early so workers can get to the game in time for the 5:05 p.m. kickoff.

“It’s going to be certainly a real test for us,” said Ault, whose team is 11-2 at home since he began his third stint as head coach in 2004. The game is the first in a string of three on the road for the Wildcats, who travel next to Big Ten foes Penn State and Wisconsin.

Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald, 31, became the youngest active head coach in Division I-A when he was promoted from assistant in July as the successor to Randy Walker, who died at age 52, apparently of a heart attack.
