Southern Miss-Central Florida

Sun Herald

Central Florida (1-2) comes into the game with an offensive line that has 108 cumulative starts, fifth best among Division I-A teams. Southern Miss (2-1) is 10th with 101. Southern Miss’ fast start has a lot to do with its line play. The unit, with four returning starters, has not allowed a sack through three games this season. And the group’s work revitalizing a stale running game led to an upset of North Carolina State on Sept. 16. The Knights are off to a slow start with their only victory coming against Division I-AA Villanova. And the Eagles might also be looking back to last year’s game in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss won 52-31 and led 45-7 at halftime after Central Florida turned the ball over six times in the first half.

But that was the only conference loss for a team that went 8-5 after 17 consecutive losses. UCF is expected to win the league’s East Division with 18 returning starters, including quarterback Steven Moffett.

Leader Call

Southern Miss head coach Jeff Bower said that junior defensive end Sean Merrill (ankle) practiced some Saturday, but was still limited. Bower also said that sophomore linebacker Mitch Craft tweaked his hamstring and was limited in practice Saturday, but he will be fine.

Mississippi Press

UCF head coach George O’Leary said one way the Golden Knights could start getting back on track is putting the ball more in their playmaker’s hands. UCF quarterback Stephen Moffett (48-0f-98 for 518 yards and four touchdowns) and wide receiver Mike Walker (24 catches, 243 yards, touchdowns) are UCF’s two biggest playmakers, however, O’Leary wants to see more production from his entire offense, especially against a good defense like Southern Miss.

Sun-Sentinel

In its first regular season in C-USA a year ago, UCF was 7-1 in league play, with its lone conference setback coming in the form of a 52-31 loss at Southern Miss.
