Saturday Gambling Preview of Three National TV Games

Saturday’s Couch Potato Guide to Winning College Football

Joe Duffy (JoeDuffy.net)

There is no such thing as a bad day to watch and win in college football games, but the first full weekend of college and pro is as good as any.  Let’s take a look at betting information for some of the national television games Saturday.

Illinois-Rutgers

This game is on ESPN2 and for those who love handicapping so called intangibles; this one is a big one.  Rutgers led 27-7 last year in the third quarter when these same two met, but lost in overtime 33-30.  According to Cy McCormick of the online betting syndicate MasterLockLine.com, first and second half bettors can expect more of the same.

McCormick expects Rutgers to come out fired up and score early but get the feeling of déjà vu with the lead late. “They nearly choked away their game to North Carolina last week and I assure you the Knights have that in the back of their mind.”

Rutgers led the Tar Heels 21-10 late, but had to intercept a pass in its own territory in the closing minutes to avoid another implosion.

Penn State-Notre Dame

A lot of people on the OffshoreInsiders.com staff wondered, before the year, how Penn State will do this campaign without graduated star quarterback Michael Robinson. The staff will find out against a Notre Dame team that beat traditional giant killer Georgia Tech last week.

Venerable head coach Joe Paterno admitted that he was “disappointed” in the play of his Nittany Lions offensive line, which got only 76 yards rushing to Akron in their opening game. That’s compared to a solid 138 yards rushing the Irish got against a stout Yellow Jacket defense.

Note that Irish quarterback Brady Quinn has gone nine quarters without throwing a TD pass. The game is broadcast in living color on NBC.

Ohio State-Texas

Top handicappers feel there is great opportunity in this classic No. 1 versus No. 2 battle.  Texas right now has the edge on defense, but experience at quarterback could decide this ABC prime-time showdown. While all recruiting experts we monitor agree that the Longhorns’ Chris McCoy is destined for greatness, he is a freshman who merely has a game against North Texas under his belt.

Ohio State’s Troy Smith, at this moment, is the better and more proven quarterback at the college level.  Texas will have to avoid distractions as starting cornerback Tarell Brown and backup linebacker Tyrell Gatewood are suspended for this game after being arrested Monday on drugs and weapons charges.
