Troy State-Rice

Press Register

Head coach Larry Blakeney made a good choice when selecting Tony Franklin as Troy’s offensive coordinator following last season. Franklin made an equally good choice in discovering—and signing—Omar Haugabook as the quarterback to run his wide-open offense. Those decisions led to the Trojans (7-5) sharing the Sun Belt Conference title and earning the league’s invitation to Friday night’s R& Carriers New Orleans Bowl against Rice (7-5) in the Superdome. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Troy’s offense goes as Haugabook goes. After a slow start—Troy won its season opener at home against Alabama State before losing four straight road games (at Florida State, Georgia Tech, Nebraska and UAB) -- the Trojans won six of their final seven games of the year, all in the league. Along the way, Haugabook, a 6-foot, 201-pounder who earned second-team All-America honors at Dodge City Community College prior to arriving at Troy, gained more knowledge of and confidence in Franklin’s pass-oriented offense.

He enters Friday’s game having thrown for 2,184 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes. He has been intercepted 16 times, most of those coming earlier in the season. He has also carried the ball 126 times for 221 yards and four more scores, giving him an average of 200 yards of total offense per game. The Trojans are a four-point underdog to a Rice team that is allowing 226 passing yards a game. Haugabook and Troy will certainly challenge the Owls’ secondary in an effort to pick up the Trojans’ first bowl win as a Division I-A team.
