NFL

Bears-Rams

Hendersonville News

The last time the Chicago Bears played on Monday night, quarterback Rex Grossman had one of the worst games of his career - and he still hasn’t recovered from it. The Bears, though, will stick with Grossman as they try to move closer to securing a first-round bye in the playoffs when they visit the St. Louis Rams on Monday night. Chicago (10-2) became the first team in the NFL to clinch a playoff berth by defeating Minnesota 23-13 last Sunday to win its second straight NFC North Division title, but Grossman had another poor performance. He completed 6 of 19 passes for 34 yards and threw three interceptions for a 1.3 quarterback rating, but Bears coach Lovie Smith is adamant that Grossman will remain his starter, despite numerous calls for veteran Brian Griese.

Chicago Tribune

The shaky Rams have been hit with internal accusations of quitting and have lost six of their last seven after a 4-1 start. But they have won 10 of their last 12 prime-time TV appearances and are 6-2 at home on Monday nights. And even at 5-7, they are the winningest opponent left on the Bears’ schedule. Perhaps notably for quarterback-evaluation purposes, they are among the worst in the NFL at stopping the run but are eighth in passing yardage allowed and pose the toughest remaining test for Grossman’s throwing. NBA

Blazers-Sixers

Phillyburbs.com

Allen Iverson won’t be with the 76ers again tonight.

Suns-Magic

Florida Today

Orlando shooting guards Hedo Turkoglu and Keith Bogans are out with ankle injuries. The game should be a study in contrasts. Whereas Orlando prefers to pound the ball inside to Dwight Howard, Phoenix instead prefers to spread the floor and will launch shots from anywhere and everywhere. The Suns take an average of 25 3-pointers a game, more than twice the Magic’s 11.1 tries a game from beyond the arc. Orlando leads the Eastern Conference at 15-7 and is four games ahead in the Southeast Division, the largest cushion in the NBA. But the Magic offense has seemed to bog down of late, missing the outside shooting of Turkoglu and the support off the bench from Bogans. The two sprained their right ankles on consecutive nights and aren’t expected back until mid-week at the earliest. The Magic have scored 169 points in their past two games—eight more than the Suns had Thursday in New Jersey. Since starting the season 1-5, Phoenix went into Sunday’s game in Charlotte having won 11 of 12. And during their nine-game winning streak, it has averaged 116.7 points. Nets-Grizzlies

NorthJersey.com

The Nets (7-12) host the NBA-worst Grizzlies tonight (5-15). It’s the first of three games against teams with a combined winning percentage of .333 (Memphis, Milwaukee, at Toronto). But the Nets have to prove they’re better than that collective group. Right now it’s a tossup, since they’ve won just 36.8 percent of their games. Scouting report: Mike Fratello’s injury-riddled group is the NBA’s fifth-lowest scoring team (93.2 points) and has lost five of six games. Athletic second-year forward Hakim Warrick, whom the Nets passed up on for Antoine Wright, leads Pau Gasol-less Memphis with a 16.1-point average. Pacers-Bulls

Indy Star

Pacers Steven Jackson was suspended by the franchise for tonight’s game against the Chicago Bulls at the United Center over his bench confrontation with coach Rick Carlisle in the second period of Saturday’s loss at Cleveland. Jermaine O’Neal had said he would play tonight, but the Pacers are doubtful.O’Neal strained his left hamstring at Seattle on Dec. 1, and aggravated it in last week’s game against Orlando. He has missed the previous two games.
