NFL

Kansas City-Oakland UNDER 36.5

This game would be as handicapping’s elderly O. Charles Dooley would call “a celebration of defense”. Herm Edwards has transformed the Chiefs from a Super Bowl contender to also-ran by changing the focus from offense to defense. Perennially one of the worst defensive teams in the league, the Chiefs are allowing just 5.4 yards per play.

However, they are only scoring 16.3 on the road.  Oakland is as top heavy defensively as any team in recent memory. Don’t blame the Raiders failures on their defense, which has been stellar. They allow 4.0 yards per rush to teams normally getting 4.2 and 6.0 yards per pass to teams normally getting 6.5. Overall they hold teams to a full half-yard per play below their normal average.

That’s a better ratio than the Bears, which are spinned as a great defensive team. It’s .4 better than 12 win San Diego and .8 better than Indianapolis.  In short, Oakland has without question the league’s worst offense, but lost in all of this is they may have the best defense.
