Free Pick: St. Petersburg Bowl UCF-Rutgers

The bowl games schedule begins today. Sensational handicapper Matt Rivers does not have a premium sports pick as many of the top sports handicappers do, but he has a free pick on Rutgers on the gridiron. The Scarlet Knights are laying 2.5 to Central Florida at BetUs Sportsbook.

I can't say that I truly love Rutgers here because this Central Florida team is pretty solid and on-fire right now after the great close to the season but the Scarlet Knights are the clear bigger program with the superior athletes and that should be enough to snatch the win.

CFU is in their home state and has won and covered five of six. I do expect them to come out excited to prove themselves against a bigger Rutgers program but I'm not so sure that in the end the Golden Knights truly can walk off of the field as the victor.

Greg Schiano will have his boys ready to chop some wood even if this is a minor bowl as the guy is a borderline great coach. Rutgers certainly did not look very good in the finale against West Virginia but they did come back in that thing and had a chance late in the frozen rain and awful weather.

The Scarlet Knights have come a long way from the beginning of the season where they were young and inexperienced and it showed. They were demolished at home by Tony Pike and the Bearcats in the opener and then looked pretty mediocre against some cupcakes in Howard and Florida International. Things though improved as Schiano put his stamp on these young players and we saw that in quality wins over South Florida and Connecticut and the easy easy victory at Louisville.

Tom Savage definitely struggled against the Mountaineers in that last game but this kid has become a pretty good quarterback and with weapons in Tim Brown, Mohamed Sanu and Joe Martinek the quarterback will be just fine today in much better conditions.

George O'Leary's team is good and should stay in this thing for 60 minutes but when push comes to shove here I am all about Rutgers in a small play today.
