Texas Bowl Sports Betting Preview: TCU and Houston

It's the Texas Bowl and appropriately enough two Texas-based teams TCU and Houston do battle. The Horned Frogs are laying 6.5 points with a total of 57.5-58.5 depending on the sportsbooks.

TCU is 7-5 straight up, Houston 8-4, but both teams are under .500 where it counts: against the spread.

TCU is 5-6 to the number, though they did finish the regular season on a 3-1 run. Houston is on a four-game spread skid and they've gone under five straight.

From our bowl previews: It's Houston as the mathematically superior team on the offensive side of the ball, but TCU on defense. Houston gets 3.7 more first downs per game, 124.8 more yards, 1.4 more yards per play. This is on 1.3 more rushing yards per attempt, 1.8 more passing yards per attempt and 1.2 more passing yards per reception. The Cougars also complete 9.5 more percent of the passes.

The only exception to Houston winning every offensive and TCU every defensive matchup is Houston allowing 2.6 less percent pass completions on defense. Other than that, the Horned Frogs are allowing 46.6 fewer total yards per game, on 1.1 less yards per play. The biggest edge is in yards per catch allowed at 3.6.

Houston will be without coach Art Briles who resigned to take the same job at Baylor. The game is essentially a home game for Houston as the contest is at Reliant Stadium.

TCU may be better than their record shows. They played their worst football when defensive end Tommy Blake left the team because of stress. The Horned Frogs were predicted to win the Mountain West.
